A trip to Gilman on Monday
< on 5/31/2009 2:55 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

Hello, I was planning a trip to Gilman on Monday and was wondering if I could get further instruction on the whereabouts. I was surprised to find out that I could Mapquest my way to Gilman but I'm worried that they won't be specific enough directions. I'm coming from Colorado Springs. Also if anyone wants to meet up with me give me a call 719 466 9311 or PM me. I know it is short notice but it's rare that I have free time and I seriously want to meet up with some UEers in the area. This would be a good opportunity for me to meet up until my work and school schedule slows down. Thanks a lot everybody.

i take the backgroads from pueblo up to gilman, and its nice and light on traffic. And the directions have been dead on. Minturn is right there, and you cant possibly miss gilman.

Just dont park anywhere obvious or the cops will find you, least they did earlier this year for me.

And they have an abundance of "you will die" dont enter type signs now.

more notice next time I would love to have went with ya. good luck

Everything worked out, I asked someone from a nearby town once I got close exactly where to find it. It was definitely a great time, the best I've seen in Colorado for sure. The woman who gave me directions told me the latest owner of the land plans on demolishing it and building a GOLF COURSE? That seems really bizarre to me, but if that is true I would definitely want to try to stop it. I'll try to post some pictures as soon as I figure out how to actually do it.

well, more like employee housing for his elite, exclusive, private ski mountain resort.

this guy

wants to build a dream resort for the wealthy, and pass it off as a civic service by tossing $162 million at the town of Minturn.

However, another government could have annexed Ginn's land if Minturn had failed to do so, Sullivan said. Red Cliff, whose boundaries border Ginn's property, had "made it pretty clear" that the it would annex Ginn's property if Minturn had not, Sullivan said.

he played the towns of Minturn and Red Cliff against each other, implying that if Minturn didn't annex Gilman so he could buy it, he'd take his 'generous donation' to Red Cliff and have them do it. the whole thing stinks.

anyway, the grand plan is to demolish all of Gilman so good ole Bobby Ginn can build dorms for all his worker bees to stay in. what he doesn't know (or chooses to ignore) is that Battle Mountain is Swiss cheese. the ground is so unstable, we found a few new sinkholes on our last trip.

mine subsidence is a bitch.

lucky for us, the economy is in the crapper. i don't think anything will happen in Gilman for at least a year, if at all. Ginn may be a greedy douche with a bunch of cash, but he's not too dumb to make a huge investment if he doesn't believe he's going to make a return on it. and environmental cleanup is VERY expensive. here's to hoping the whole thing is too rich for his blood.

You know, I'd rather see Gilman cave in on itself and become totally useless to anyone, than to see more housing/playgrounds built for the benefit of rich douchebags. I know, that must sound awful, huh?

On a lighter note, I have a vague memory of drunkenly thinking that jumping into that big sinkhole would be a good idea, and Quarantine suggesting someone keeping me away from it...

Not really, especially since that's what is most likely to occur anyway. As we've all been saying for years, the guy has no idea what he's getting into. The land would be difficult to develop without there being miles of flooded mine workings beneath it.
Mr. Ginn simply picked up a '71 Monaco with serious rust issues. Looks like a great project from the surface, but the nice body hid some hideous framerot beneath that must be custom fabricated to make the car safe again.

That's actually a good question. I'm not up there enough to have a real opinion, but 'feels like the residents of both towns are irritated & confused about the whole situation.
From my limited knowledge it seems like the old timers are already tired of yuppies building crap and bringing their spoiled and wasteful lifestyles to the rough country... and now they've got to deal with a possible explosion. Like Aspen in the mid 70s, Minturn and Red Cliff may fall to the corporate.
But on the other hand, the money and possible improvements that come with an annexation like this could really help.
Now however, nobody knows what's going on. The project appears to have come grinding to a halt and not much current official information is available. But that isn't uncommon with these people.

Step one, buy land and unveil an idea for a mountain kingdom.
(Step two, unknown.)
Step three, profit.

Hm. Sounds like the government sometimes doesn't it?

Man, I really want a chance to experience Gilman before it's too late!!!! Why build all this new shit when existing stuff is not selling? What a waste!

it'd take a LOT of work to get those buildings back in order...it's cheaper to knock them down and build new.

I meant existing stuff as in other houses and buildings elsewhere in the state are not selling! They should just leave Gilman alone!!!

Before I went I figured it was more secluded than it actually is. It's pretty might right along 24. If the residents think it's an eyesore then I would understand the demo. I saw some of those sinkholes though, if it gets demolished I wouldn't see it being a good idea to build anything on that land!

LEAVE GILMAN ALOOONEE

I don't foresee much of anything happening to Gilman anytime soon... In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a LOT of subsidence happening in the near future. We saw lots of sinkholes the other day and Imprez can attest that the water level in the mine is WAY low right now despite all the rain.

I'd be up for another Gilman trip in the near future, I usually have Saturday and/or Sunday free.

edit- Luna- We had to keep an eye on you pretty much everywhere, not just around the sinkholes.
"Watch out for that mud!"
"Don't let her fall into the sinkhole!"
"That's wet, don't slip"
"You see that hole? It's a quarter-mile deep. Don't let her near it"
