| | | | Ladder "door" Help < on 3/5/2004 4:47 AM >
| | | Hello. There is a water tower in my town that we need to conquer. The problem is that about 20 feet up there is a ladder cover that is pad locked closed. The padlock on it is pretty haggard and rusted. It is also up pretty high from the stopping point of the ladder. Picking is almost out of the question due to the condition and position of lock. We dont want to cut the lock for detection reasons, as well as there is no leverage to cut, plus we are going against the UE ethics ;). Does anybody know how to bypass these ladder "doors" or a less destructive way of opening. At the moment we think bypassing it is our best option. This water tower is about 100ft high in the middle of our village on a hill with a phenominal view. We are doing this for the challenge and for the view, not to spraypaint "ZEPPLIN RULEZ". Any Ideas/Experiences?

| | | Can you wedge your feet between the ladder and the wall/supports? Climb the supports? Any other ways?

| | | Depending on how it's constructed, you might be able to climb the outside of the ladder cage (assuming there's a ladder cage, that is). Of course, if you fall you're probably a goner, and the cages I've seen on water towers don't seem like they're all that sturdy...

| | | Hey Herb, any chance you could get a picture of the ladder door thing? It'd help us give you better ideas. --WR [last edit 3/5/2004 6:09 AM by White Rabbit - edited 1 times]

| | | Do you know how many people get trapped on water towers every year? Without a doubt it is one of the most frequent places where rope rescues need to be performed. Find something else to climb unless you're an expert.

| | | Yeah, a picture would help us try to give you a solution. I know from experience with my town water tower that there is a large (8 inch) pipe running down about three feet to the left of the ladder. Don't know what it is used for, but it you ger a running start you can leap from the ground, to a gorizontal pipe, then kind of bound off the vertical pipe supports and get ahold of the caged ladder. From there, I just scale up the cage or through the bars to the ladder. Be warned, though, the sun has wreaked havoc on the paint at my water tower. I remember on one occassion slipping on a large paint flake that broke off and slid down the domed top. Almost fell a good fourty or fifty feet, though I was lucky enough to catch my foot on the very edge lip. Be warned man, I was lucky, but just watch your step or bring some rope.
<reuben> somebody keeps jiggling the doorknob on my front door, then running away <reuben> i don't know if i should call the police, or hook up some electricity to the doorknob <cristobal> why don't you put ice on the stairs <cristobal> and heat up the door knob <cristobal> and swing paint buckets down from your two story foyer <cristobal> then a few years later, fade from the public eye..... |

| | | If you must do it... I'd suggest you cut the lock, it's better to lose a lock than lose your life.

| | | Cut [and replace with one of your own!] the lock or simply go around it:
Of course, besides the view, I can see no other reason to climb a water tower in the first place.

| | | you know mabye you should check out the rope ladder idea. It would work well. Would get you over without damaging anything and be pretty simple to attach and take off.

A ladder is probably your best bet. Just make sure it doesn't fall or is removed. Probably a good idea to have someone spotting on the ground.

| | | i dont know how you'd get around the lock, maybe climb up the cage as other people have suggested, but depending on how old, etc the tower is, there might be radio or microwave transmitters, and those things can mess you up pretty good.

| | | Just use a grappling hook, toss it up a few rungs and scale the thing ninja style. Just be sure you measure the risk/reward factor if you plan on bypassing it though if it's particularly high up. Though I find your grip tends to be strongest when you've got nothing to catch you. Used to scale an abandoned crappy tire around here by the pipe in the back and let me tell you this, when you got to the top (bout 2.5-3 stories high) you could just about leave dents in the pipe.
