Cheap night vision alternative?

I found this online today:

http://www.kbtoys.com/genProduct.html?PID=1738639&ctid=17&ls=toys

and was considering picking them up as a cheap alternative to getting a real set of night vision goggles, considering the substantial cost difference (i'm just a college student that works part time for some extra cash). I imagine the IR LED's on it are not too powerfull so I would probably supplement it with an IR flashlight, but I figure this would be usefull for the places I go, which are mostly indoor and are low light situations (although very rarely pitch black). They seem to have a battery pack that must be worn on a belt and is connected by a cable (saw more detailed pics on amazon.com), but thats not a problem for me.

I was hoping to get some other opinions on em. I may pick em up just to try it out, as I would be able to return them if I wasnt happy and only loose like 5 dollars (shipping).

On a side note, I also just ordered these gloves:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/opsgear/opnetagl.html

They seem pretty nice and were only 16 dollars after you apply the discount code with shipping and everything. I'll post again when I get them.

Cool!
The best part is, they make you look like a cyborg.
;)

Still, I don't like the way they put "Real Working" in quotations like that. Makes me think there's something up. Advertising class taught be to suspect stuff like that.

Maybe so, but "Real working" is often used on kids toys because there are a lot of toys out there that just LOOK like they work.

For example, one thing I remember when I was a kid... seeing an ad for "Moon Boots" which would (according to the ad) "let you walk without gravity, like on the moon!"

Closer inspection proved them to be plastic "shoes" on springs so you'd "bounce" with each step. Hardly anti-gravity.

huskies - such fluff.

True Av. No argument here.

I'm just saying that it makes me hesitate. Sometimes when something in an ad is emphasized, it could just be an ad gimmick. It happens all the time. Like when a business claims the more I buy the more I save, or when a prominent toothpaste company claims to be the only toothpaste with flouristat or other such junk. Remember Sega's blast technology?
Slightly different situation I know but being a Graphics guy with advertising training, I always take a second look. Shadows a paranoid guy.

I just figure, When looking at it it's always good to be a little wary.

I remember the moon boots, that sucked

In addition, those gloves look cool!

This is the same thing from KB Toys, but with more info, from Optics Planet...

http://opticsplanet.net/kidpower-nightvision.html

"These Night Vision Goggles from KidPower let kids see up to 75 feet in the dark without being spotted. This product is suitable for children ages 3 and up. This is not a pretend night vision set, these high tech goggles allow vision in the dark. Features comfort-fit eyepiece, an ultra-clear display that allows for visibility up to 75 feet, gray image scale output, enhanced infrared optics. Adjustable to fit all head sizes from child to adult. Uses real infrared technology. Requires 4 "AA" batteries (not included). Night Vision Goggles may vary slightly from image shown."

Now, get your Junior Urban Explorer these goggles, a Maglight and a IR filter for the flashlight...

http://www.pvs7.com/infrared.htm

... and they will be in the basement of their elementary school before you can say, "time for your Ritalin."

I'd wear that... but I'd paint the damn thing a bit, so it wasn't silvery anymore... camo of course...

75ft, huh? I wonder if that's a limitation of the IR LEDs, or the sensor itself?

thats a good question... I think it would be the limitation of the IR... otherwise it would mean, regardless of light you couldn't see past 75 feet ?

Somehow it doesn't seem like it would ligitimatly work, at least under night conditions. Most night vision goes for what, $500, $600, $1000US...

(Shhh, there's a scam... )

...Although I suppose it could have a optical lense that digitally magnifies and brightens/contrasts the veiw. But it just doesn't seem realistic...

I imagine they work, either way, I can always return them if they dont, and only loose the shipping cost. of course I would spraypaint them matte black and buy an IR flashlight for em, or get a filter.

As far as cost goes, its plausible that they work, I've seen "real" night vision monoculars for 130 bux, and these were originally like 100. They also have a battery pack you have to wear on your waist, to hold the 4 AA batteries, but thats not much of a prob for me.

Thanks Shane for taking the risk of purchasing them. I'm really looking forward to your assessment of their value. Please let us know what you think of their performance as soon as you can. If they're good I might buy them myself.

when they say you can only see out to 75ft. I belieive that it's the resolution of the picture that limits how far you can see. more money = better resolution =longer distance

I hate to be such a skeptic, but given that it's free with the purchase of a box of cereal, I'd suspect that it's just a fake lens with a green light attached to the side of it. (Batteries not included)

Wow, these night vision gadgets are sure cheap. The camera accessory is under $40US and the scope is under $100 US. And they seem real.

Now those actually look like decent NV tools - I'd rather pick that up then go for the KB toys one... at least it looks a little more professional/adult like.
