[I did find a short archived thread about this, but can't revive an archived discussion.]

Has anyone been to the Walsen Power Plant recently?

http://cbs4denver....aces.2.990566.html

Is there anything left of the Walsen mining camp?

Do you guys think it's worth an explore?

i've not been personally, but it's on my list for summer. there is definitely still a building there.

funny story, i was in englewood camera a while back, and bryce was showing me photos from a trip the staff went on. it looked like something cool, so i asked what it was. they had gone to the power plant.

might be worth the drive.

do you know how to waltz?

WALSEN POWER PLANT

Year Listed: 2009
County: Huerfano County
Status: ALERT
Context: Industrial
Date Constructed: 1898

Significance:
Built to provide energy to the Walsen Mine, Walsen Camp, and the town of Walsenburg, the power plant is the last remaining structure of the once bustling Walsen Camp, a coal mining settlement dating from the late 1870s. At its peak the Walsen Camp boasted over 200 homes and a population of 1,200.

Threat When Listed:
The building suffers from years of neglect, vandalism, and scrap metal scavenging. The current owner has an eight-foot chain link and barbwire fence surrounding the perimeter of the building but vandalism and scavenging continues. With the high value of scrap metal the building will continue to be a prime target.

Last Update:
February 2009

I was there in January, can't remember if I posted photos yet. Very cool building, it's small but it's got a lot of character.

The entire boiler/furnace is gone (they even ripped out half of the East side of the building to remove it!) but the lower levels are full of stuff, albeit scattered about. There's a really neat generator on one of the upper levels that's the size of a car.

It's neat, when I was there it didn't seem accessible or someone was driving around but I see some of you have gotten inside.

doing service calls I have drove by this place and almost wrecked each time trying to look at it. It seems easy enough to get too, and now I know what it is.

If anyone is gonna go, hit me up please.

I have done that one myself also...every time I am in the area.

Texting and driving is much safer then driving by an amazing abandonment. ;)

I've done that before, but with outfalls. Heck, even in the same area. I've crooned my head trying to see what the water level was at Rivergate many times.

Oh my god- EVERYWHERE I drive I'm a hazard! I'm CONSTANTLY On the lookout for abandonments and either writing them down or trying to remember exactly where it is, so I can go home & research! Most of the ones I've found are right on main roads... imagine how many there are off the beaten path!
