| | Question to y'all about why we seem to love exploring... < on 4/27/2009 3:21 AM >
| | | Hey all - I'm kindof a lurky member here... I don't post all that often. Right now I'm doing a project for a class (WWU student, junior) that deals with the concepts of space and place. While many others in my class have chosen to 'in-depthly' explore areas known to them, I have decided to explore one totally unknown to me. Since I love UE, it only makes sense this way. The project is really just beginning, and as a part of it I'm trying to compile different people's opinions on why they enjoy UE. So, if you have the time, I'd love to hear about what it means to YOU. Why do YOU go and explore the places you do? What is it about being in abandoned spaces that is so intriguing? Thanks for the time -E

| | | Personally, I do it because it's a bit of history. All of these places has a story to tell, and I'm interested in uncovering 'em. anyway, that's my reason. Hope it helps.

| | | Seeker hit a large part of it, the history of a given place. I normally research the history before I explore. Another big part is "THE THRILL" of going into someplace that may be dangerous and/or secure. Even just being out with friends or alone, there have been some of the most memorable time in my life in an abandonment. There is a serenity about it. Daylight or darkness, it's all the same.

| | | I enjoy UE for a bunch of different reasons. First it appeals for my sense of adventure. Going out into our world and actively being a part of it, always having your eyes open. I am always amazed as to what our world looks like behind barred grates and closed doors. All the systems which keep us comfortable are amazing to see and understand. UE has a true educational aspect to it. UE is a real activity, like visiting a park or going for a hike. It isn't something I can walk into a store and buy. It isn't a thing at all. It allows me to escape from the part of society which finds value in only those things which are shiny and sold off of shelves. Friends - sure I can go to a movie with a friend, but nothing beats sneaking through the night and waiting for the perfect moment to scale a fence or climb in a drainage pipe. UE is real.

Engineering for me. I crack up every time I see a telephone pole stuck down through a drain, a house beautifully remodeled with everything bent around a long-bricked-off chimney, or other equally silly things.

AnAppleSnail is right. you see some wacky stuff exploring. Especially if the site is from the fifties. I mean, weird symmetry, crazy wallpaper, ect. Just more stuff I wouldn't see without UE.

| | | I've yet to totally figure out why I like abandoned buildings so much. Its a rather strange hobby for a teenage girl. I think its because I have an unbelievably strong sense of curiosity, I just want to know everything. Why is it abandoned?, are people still paying taxes to the city for it?, why did they leave all their stuff here?, are they going to come back?, who lived/worked here? were they sad to leave it? whats going to happened to it now? etc. I guess exploring allows me to answer some of those question myself. And besides, the photo ops in abandoned places are the best in the world.
Sorry, what was that you were saying about forever alone? |

| | | Seeker and Olive both said what I was going to say. The history of the buildings and the people who used/lived in these places is fascinating to me. Also, I think the impermanence of it all is interesting. We build these huge structures that take so much money, and so many people to make it happen, and we have all these laws that govern what belongs to who and who has to stay away... but then eventually it all turns into a pile of rubble. Nothing belongs to anyone forever.
