I have not used it, but I would suggest lookig for some online comparisions, there are some pretty good ones out there. What are you thinking of using it for?

This should probobly be in the Tutorials/Usefull Info forum.

One thing you should know about Garmin, is that they dont stand behind what they sell. I have a Garmin GPS 12 and the casing broke apart (bad glue job) they would fix it, but for $60, I guess thats how they handle all problems with their uinits.
I think the modle your talking about replaced the GPS 12. One thing I noticed with the unit I have, is that if you enter more than one location, the last location is always off by 69 miles.

Yeah, I had a Garmin, but I dont remember what year it was. I used it to hike in the mountains, but I had a problem that it was always off by at least, I'd say about 3 miles. The trailmap on it was really accurate for some reason. I also had a problem with the fact that I would have full sattelite reception and for some reason, it would lose all reception and its location out out of nowhere. Garmins are alright, I like the design but I would reccomend going with maybe another GPS like Lorus (Or is that Loran) I dont know, one of the two. My unit also had a big price tag 450$ without a warranty.

I think you were thinking of Lowrance maybe? I've never seen one of their recreational type units, but I'm pretty sure my local LeBaron http://www.lebaron.ca had one. I personally own a Garmin GPS 12 and a Magellan Meridian Platinum and can't really say a bad thing about either one of them. The important thing about buying a GPS is identifying your needs and making sure you can live with the foibles of your particular unit.

You might want to check out Joe Mehaffey's website http://gpsinformation.net/ for some in depth product reviews.

Like anything else, which particular GPS is best will start a raving discussion between the Magellan and Garmin types.

(Or is that Loran)

LORAN is an old-style locating system, based on radio beacons in various parts of the world. The system triangulates your position based on the time delay between radio signals, and isn't as accurate or reliable as GPS. I've also never seen a small reciever/locator that uses this system, most are large bulky units mounted on boats.

So yeah, you probably didn't mean loran

Just wanted to update my old post, I went ahead and purchased the Garmin 60C GPS and im quite happy with it and would recommend it, its a full color unit, it gives driving directions in text form, and seems to work great, I plan to use it this summer to locate and explore abandoned mines in my area, I also purchased the Garmin "Topo" software which does show many abandoned mines, but had I the chance to do it over I would have bought the National Geographic software instead as it seems to have way more detail, I wouldnt recommend the Garmin software.
