New Highway at Hoover Dam

So, I had to miss Doors Open Denver, due to circumstances I wasn't inclined to prevent (Las Vegas is sunny and not snowy), so I decided to go see Hoover Dam, one of the great architectural endeavors of this century. I was surprised to find a new highway is being constructed further down the canyon (presumably because dam[n] traffic sucks), and found the arch construction of the new bridge at least as fascinating as the dam itself.

I think the construction of bridges is interesting too. These guys have an interesting technique.

It is the first composite concrete/steel arch bridge in the US, with a total arch span of just over 1000 feet!

You should have seen the sights when both of their cranes collapsed a few months ago. Now that was something to see.

Not really, same thing happened to Miller Park in Milwaukee while it was being build. One of my ex's customers were the parents of one of the guys that died. But yeah wreckage is cool in it's own right.

FYI, there is no construction crew / security in or around the Nevada side pillar (photo #2) today when I drove by it. Certainly possible to climb to top and take photo.
That would be something interesting... careful of collapsing cranes though.

Just for the record, in case other UE'ers are headed to the dam, it was considered a potential target for enemy sabotage during WW-II, so troops were deployed to it, AND there was some sort of hardened observation post/machine gun pillbox type structure (at least one, maybe more) on a nearby hilltop.

I've never been there & am just operating from late night memory here, but it/they are noticeable to tourists these days who take their eyes off the dam & look up to the hillsides.

It/they might be open to hike to or might be UE'able, but I'll point out that the Hoover Dam is now considered a viable terrorist target so there's an enhanced security awareness, blah blah blah...

The pillboxes are indeed easily accessible. But yours to find.

When I was younger my family took several drives over the hoover dam; it's really a magnificent drive - I quite miss it. Has anyone seen inside the intake towers? do they have tours that go down into the powerhouse and generators? I'd love to ninja my way in there, unless homeland security is reading. My door was expensive, please don't break it!
