Flash Photography during night exploring

So my friends and I are planning to do a night trip and I wanted to take some photos, but the guy who's leading is paranoid because he thinks the flash will alert the authorities. Are his worries warranted or is flash photography cool?

There was a discussion about this in the Flashlight forum recently, and a few people have been busted thanks to their use of lights of some form. I personally once had my camera flash alert security at a site, who then called the police. Another time, I brought rural property owners down on myself by light painting. Fun times!

So, yeah, it pays to be judicious about your use of any kind of light - in darkness, even a dim light carries a long way.

Simple: don't use the flash.

Tripods+long exposures = not arrested.

And it looks better. I almost killed a newb I brought when she whipped out a cheap POS and went to town... I mean, it didn't help that she walked in front of an open shutter, and wouldn't STFU about orbs, but.... none of those things are good.

Simpler: Go during the day. (if feasible)

Exactly what I was going to say!
It's so much easier in non boarded up places in the day. Less risk of injury too as you can see where you're going. My next stop is a house right in the middle of other houses with no windows boarded and all the curtains open which makes it a day trip.
My last infiltration was entirely boarded up and dark so it didn't matter day or night and I used flash to my hearts content.
Use judgement! If flash will be seen, DON'T USE IT!

Right, it depends on the building and the security situation. A few excellent urbex photographers very effectively use flashes and coloured gels in their night photography.

Flashes at night are very cool, thats why all us cool kids use em!

But seriously, its another risk/reward evaluation. Recently WarBird69 and I went to an old factory with open holes where the windows used to be. Went at night but decided that we'd be ok to take some flash photos when there were no cars driving by outside. But just in case we left quickly.

i've walked away from n00bs using flash. Like... left them in the building all by themselves to find their way back out. Never to explore with them again.

She actually hates it when that happens so much that Tamara went out of her way to thank me for pointing my light down and not doing anything stupid like using a flash.

Well, like I said it's not so black and white as that. What if your in an area of town where you're unlikely to be seen? The windows are blacked out? Your on your way out and know you be long gone by the time the fuzz could get there? There are plenty of times when it's just fine.

If it's that remote, or that easy to get away from, then there's still no obstacle to a daytime visitation. As others have mentioned, it's safer, and you're less likely to draw unexpected attention.

One other point that should be made (I apologize if someone else has, and I've missed it) is that in many jurisdictions, the charges are heavier when you're caught at night vs. during the day.

As much as one believes it's a location where the risk of being caught is minimal, you can never account for the random.

Thanks for the advice guys. My original idea was to take my digital point and shoot as it'll be easier to upload them on my computer, but I can take my old 35mm and a tripod as MindHacker suggested.

But that raises another question, since I don't have my own photo lab, and nor does any of my friends I'd have to process them at longs or safeway or a store like that. Can I get busted that way?

agreed. i have been in a similar situation where i have just quietly slipped away to another part of the site

nothing kills a good exploration than someone suddenly letting off flashes and basically putting out the bat signal to security or people nearby

its not always an issue but rule of thumb would say anything that advertises your position is bad news

Chases are always fun, thats why we live action role play in a force called the Steel Shield. I actually have guy trailing us and well haha the person I'm taking on the role play has no idea my tailer isn't a cop or a wild animal when they set off sounds. Yes a great way to get caught but the rush when you buddy takes off two 12 foot drops off a rooftop to get away is irresistible. Kind of fought club mentality.

Don't worry, abandoned buildings are probably at least 18 years old so there's nothing illegal about pictures of them.

Seriously, what's there to bust? All they could show is that you have film from some site that people at the photo lab probably wouldn't recognize anyway, and if they did there's still nothing to prove that you were the one who took them or that you were even ever there. On top of that, keep in mind the usual level of interest of someone processing pictures all day - after a few thousand pictures of kids birthday parties and the like I'd be willing to bet that their only reaction to UE pictures would be "that's cool" as they go back to pictures of kids blowing out candles.

Awesome, thanks for the help! I think that's all the questions I have for photography.
