I got it up..now what?
< on 3/25/2009 7:03 PM >

So if you've read my last post you'll recall that I had a great time trying to get into an old theater next to The Werx in Hamilton.

I did manage to get onto the upper roof, but what I found up there was a few vents and a tightly nailed wooden door.

My friend said she knew there is a sure way in up there as she has gone inside after being let in by someone who climbed in from the roof.

So I can't get the door open, the vents? Please don't say the vents LOL.

If it stays up for more than fours, they say seek medical attention.

I think you already answered yourself. If there are vents and a door, then those are the accesses.

Show up at 9:30 with 15 dollars cash and your fingers crossed.

If the vent is the access point I'd like to verify with someone who's gone down the vents and can say that it's a reasonable access point.

Because I know that there is reasonable access from the door, but with hands alone I don't think it's possible, I don't want to cause damage and I don't want to break down the door to get in.

So has anyone been down the vents? I would not try it myself unless I knew someone has done it because of the nature of the height and the age of the vents it just does not come across to me as being safe.

More importantly, there is the fun and enjoyment that comes of having to be rescued by the fire department when you become securely wedged and cannot move.

Thanks for bringing that up.

Or even if anyone could say to me for sure that those vents are not safe. I don't think they're safe.

If you climb into a residential/standard commercial roof vent, make sure your confident with a 8-14' drop (Through; at worst, riveted and folded stainless steel sheet metal, build-down ceiling tracking, and gypsum ceiling tiles...at best, the venting itself and drywall.).
If you climb into a roof vent in an old theatre, Make your peace with God...Unless you happen to know for an absolute fact that room below is a standard height.

Those ducts are likely held up by a small steel band and a couple screws...every 2-3 feet or so.

Depending on how bad you want in, and if you promise to put it back the way saw it...Your best chance is the nailed door I would imagine. Especially on the roof, if your careful you won't do any damage at all. But thats only if you really want it.

Be realistic, it's rarely like the movies...Only very large buildings with very large hrv's and air exchange systems have vents big enough to squeeze into. Even if you did...the noise would be deafening.

Thankyou, Just don't wanna see a "I bailed hard today...and died" post.

That's good your little one's starting daycare, FREEDOM! *Braveheart shout*

I don't wanna start a huge tool discussion but there is a little thing...some people call it a catspaw but its simply a nail puller that does little damage to the wood...lets you get on the head of a nail and draw it out fairly easily. Pop them out on one side and squeeze in...Keep in mind that having stuff like that on you puts you in the burglar category though.

Just don't break/take things.

Locks...fair game.

Thats why I highly suggest to anyone who might need a tool to get into a place to do it in two stages. Have a buddy watch your back while you secure an access point. Preferably opening a door or window after entering the break location. Leave with your tools and come back later so that if you are caught at least they can't say you broke in. Because after you leave someone else will be able to get in that way as well. The second trip out you're simply entering.

Don't get caught on the first trip. Keep a sentry, have a route planned and a stash location for your tools planned. Fast in, faster out.

I would never break or take anything of value. I've taken things out of the trash at the Lister and I've got bricks from demo sites etc. Nothing of any importance. I want a vial of goop from the lifesaver factory....for example.

Strollers are hard to climb with, you don't even want to take it off the sidewalks.

Someone in the US had their charges beefed up to include theft for taking something equally valueless. Best not to take anything at all.

I know of someone who got charged with Burglary for having a NEWSPAPER on his person at one hospital; the others in the group were charged with only trespassing.

So wait were they saying he stole the newspaper?

Really?

Well all things aside, I'm going to jail LOL

I have gloves, first aid stuff, a flashlight collection and a pocket knife.

Going to have to look into more laws here!

Maybe I should bring a receipt for my pipe and green, incase they think I may have stolen that too?

Just in fun.

Yeah get receipts for everything I own.

No I'm not THAT worried because honestly if anyone runs a background check on me they'll see that I have a perfectly clean record and come from a ;) clean family.

Meaning I have an Italian last name and I'm from the west side of a catholic town.

*sings* woke up this morning...got myself a gun*

No seriously. I've never been in trouble with the law after the age of 12.

So likely if I do get caught they're not going to go hard on me because I have a perfect record.

some people here got busted at a site and just by having gloves they tried to include those as implements used for break and enter purposes....the pocket knife wont do u any favours either

in all seriousness, if they can make a charge stick they probably will.

Well I better rethink some gear then. I always have a pocket knife it's just as simple as that. I always have a flashlight it's just as simple as that. Like hello I have kids! Dads need EVERYTHING.

I don't think they can make it stick if it isn't true.

I'm professionally well known as someone who does not even smoke. Wins parenting awards and contributes to the community. I have no worries. Everyone from the CAS to the medical community and the local community knows me well as a harmless but intelligent eccentric.
