| | | Attn Artists: Help needed with a survey < on 3/24/2009 7:09 PM >
| | | Hey UER, it's been a long time since I've posted. I have to do a survey for my statistics course, and I need at least 14 more replies. This only extends to people who are currently employed as artists, or anything involving the art field (such as art teachers).
The questions: A - What was your major in college? B - On average, how many hours per week do you work? C - About how many weeks did it take you to find your job? D - What was your starting (hourly) salary? E - Are you satisfied with your career? F - Do you feel that you have job security?
Thanks to anyone who participates in the survey.

The questions: A - What was your major in college? Architecture B - On average, how many hours per week do you work? 40 C - About how many weeks did it take you to find your job? In Architecture, never - tough marker in NYS. Now in IT D - What was your starting (hourly) salary? Out of college? maybe like $12/hr. E - Are you satisfied with your career? Sure. F - Do you feel that you have job security? Yup, I'm in a union.

| | | A - What was your major in college? Fine Art, Concentration in 3-D studio art and glass blowing B - On average, how many hours per week do you work? I spend 8 hours a day at my day job testing lab equipment, and another 8 after that in my studio making my own work. C - About how many weeks did it take you to find your job? This is one of many stop-gap jobs that I have had since graduation (~2006) I do not want to make a career out of it. I have and will continue to pursue my own work in order to build a portfolio with the intention of getting into an MFA program and eventually teaching at a university level. D - What was your starting (hourly) salary? hard to say... i think my first "real" job out of college I was making 18/hr or so. E - Are you satisfied with your career? If this question is directed at my studio practice--absolutely, there is nowhere I would rather be. if it is directed at my day job that supports my ability to pursue my career--it could be worse, it isnt a long term solution but it keeps a roof over my head, food on my plate, and supplies in my studio. F - Do you feel that you have job security? nope--at will employment in our economy.

| | | Art doesn't necessarily mean paint and pictures. It can also mean music and the creative side of art. So... What was your major in college? - Post Production, Pro Tools Certification, 22 years of piano/music (to-date) On average, how many hours per week do did you work? - Depends on project. 4 hours min, over 20 hours on average, 48+ max per week About how many weeks did it take you to find your job? - Well, I still own a post production studio, but I also had contract work. Maybe 2-3 weeks? What was your starting (hourly) salary? - For studio: $35/hour starting. Contract: $15-25/hour.
Are Were you satisfied with your career? - Yes. I have moved on to other venues and industries since then as the music industry is very slow...
Do Did you feel that you have job security? - Oh yeah. If the industry was strong and I stayed where I was, I could have easily retired at age 45 with the jobs I was working at. Yeah, multiple jobs. It was fun and I'd do it again if I was given the opportunity!
