SWEET Titan-I photos!!!

Hello people

I know we have all seen the Titan-I bases a few times but I just did my first trip and I took some great photos. I just wanted to share a couple of the highlights. We hauled my Nikon D80 (DSLR) and a big freaking Quantaray external flash unit through the entire base. It was a pain in the ass carefully unpacking the camera and mounting the flash every time I wanted to take a photo but I think it was worth it. There are a couple real nice shots of the super cool rotating crane inside the powerhouse. I set the flash to "supernova" and the 65 foot tall ceiling looks like it's 5 feet away. The shot of the underside of the missile doors shows parts of the hydraulic assembly that would have pushed those massive doors open, COOOOL! Enjoy!

Take care and be safe...

Cool! I can't imagine hauling lots of gear into a place like that... I even think my P&S would be cumbersome! Glad you had a successful expedition!

Thanks for the positive feedback. I noticed in one thread somebody mentioned the crane assembly and somebody else sounded shocked to hear about it so I just wanted to shed some light on that cool-ass crane (pun intended).

Oh God. I mean, I do love my 4x5, but hauling it into anywhere even remotely inaccessible would be well, interesting.

Oh lordy that was a backbreaker. Getting into the California base is a challenge with about 45-50 lbs of gear.

Props to you, Ironmtw.

And here are the fruits of my own labours

Thank You!

I also interviewed a man who has been inside of a Titan probably more than any of us here have. He eventually made a three-dimensional game map out of it and taped a fly-through of a Titan base. You can see it at Bearings: http://www.terrast...an-missile-history

Thanks, Tunnelbug...don't forget to mention the website that the guy you interviewed created, possibly the most detailed Titan I site in existence.

I'm actual quite partial to the 1st of Tunnelbug's myself. I love the "painting with light" look of it.

18 not including Vandy, but yeah. 18 fully operational, with three silos each, making a grand total of 54 missiles.

In addition, Vandy technically had 4 Titan 1 silos, but one blew up so only three remain and all are completely inaccessible, unless you plan on being on an active military facility. If you include the SLTF, it had 5, but I consider the SLTF more of a Titan 2 silo.

sutter buttes was the only base in California for exploring, but it is no longer accessible.

Hey Tunnelbug

COOL SHOTS!!! Man that base looks like it is in a lot better shape than our Colorado bases. I'm a caver so I'm used to hauling gear underground. In fact I'm usually laying down on my side with a bag tied around my ankle as I wiggle through some God forsaken muddy slot. Keep up the good work.

Not a member of any grotto or club... I'm just a caver from Arizona and I'm new to Colorado. Definitely looking to meet some people and get underground in my new state. When I was in the Titan I was thinking "man I wish there were some nice squeezes in here" but with out the lead, asbestos, and God knows what other toxins...
