| | | Last night I got my simple set of UrbEx supplies! I'm stoked! Would any of you recommend that I also get a cheap pair of binoculars? (So you don't end up hiking to somewhere you thought would be somewhere cool, but didn't know because you couldn't see that far away?) I have shoes and a camera too... anything I'm missing? I do know that eventually I'll need an asbestos-rated respirator...

Not yet. But it can't hurt to be prepared, even if I don't personally smoke (waste of money if you ask me.) And drains are not the only location that waterproofing your gear might be a good idea. You'd be surprised at the amount of tunnels and lower lying parts of abandonments are flooded. Seeing as they are cheap I'd pick some up.

| | | Ooh, yeah, I've got plenty of baggies of all shapes & sizes! Don't take up much room in a backpack, so I'll put that on the list! Yeah I don't smoke either... I'm actually 4 years quit...!! (Holy shit, did I just say that I, the person who I never would quit smoking is 4 years "sober"!?) Yeah, it'd probably be a good idea to carry around a stale pack of Marlboros! But in it's place, I've recently taken up drinking because of a very poor performance review at my job simply because that bitc- I mean, my boss hates me. I do GREAT work, but she hates me. :/

| | | I reckon you're missing: a camera, a bag, first aid, a hat (or some sort of cover,) a pen, paper, hobocurrency (or a big stick,) and more cowbell.

Band Aids, triple antibiotic ointment, Small bottle of Disinfectant, an ace bandage, maybe gauze. OTC Pain killer. Excedrin works good because it has caffeine that will wake you up. Bendadryl if you have any allergies; even if you don't you never know what you or a fellow explorer could have an reaction too. moist towelette or alcohol preps are good too. Duct tape will work in a pinch for medical repairs. Small can of WD-40 might also be good. I believe they have a "No Mess Pen" which could easily fit into a backpack. Duct tape and WD-40 can fix anything. If it's supposed to move and doesn't: WD-40. If it moves and it's not supposed to: Duct Tape. And just a suggestion; but L.L.Bean warranties EVERY product they sell for life. So if you bought a backpack through them and then tore it to shreds going over razor wire or something... they'd give you a new one. (tell them it was torn up by a dog or bear or bobcat or something; they'd replace it). If you broke a multitool they'd replace it.

| | | I recommend extra moist towelettes anyhow. Sucks if you don't have any when you have an itch in your eye or get something in your mouth and you realize you've been touching all sorts of nastiness for quite some time and probably don't want it anywhere near your eye or mouth. There are also a lot of posts in the Rookie forum about different types of gear if you're wanting to swap some stuff out once you get into the hang of things a bit more. http://www.uer.ca/...p?fid=1&catid=1089

First aid kits are pretty universal. I would say just make sure it has something to clean and cover a wound, some medicine, stuff for burns, a sterile knife, latex gloves, and tweezers. Hat - to protect your hair from asbestos and other chemicals!

| | | What I usually have in my backpack for building explorations (I have other equipment for draining). Sorry, some of it is written in French. gants = gloves gants caoutchouc = rubber gloves (for humid areas) corde = rope barre tendre = granola bar (to avoid starvation ) miroir = mirror (very useful when you want to make sure a room is empty before entering it) eau de source = drinking water (for desinfection or to avoid dehydration) cellulaire = cell phone trépied = tripod masque P-100 = P-100 mask (for asbestos, pigeon fiences, etc.) piles = batteries lampe frontale = head lamp cuillère = this is a plastic device that women can use to pee standing. Yeah, I know it sounds strange, but it comes handy in certain places, trust me! trousse secours = first aid kit in which I added bigger band aids and some advil and tylenol. hand sanitizer : good for desinfecting and to wash your hands of course. duct tape : for securing stuff, etc. pepper spray : to deter animal attacks (and possibly humans') I also have binoculars and a rope ladder that usually stay in the car, unless I'm positive I'll need them. | | | What are the carribeaners for? just currious. I usually do carry something that's been worth while - I have a pair of police issue Hatch brand puncture resistent kevlar gloves that have come in handy a couple of times (damn, rusty nails).
