Signs of the bad economy - abandoned modern houses

Ran across this while coal-mine hunting today...I've seen this house many times, but from far away it looks fine. I happened to drive right by it and saw that it was abandoned. It sits on a large property with a private lake.
It kind of looks like there was a fire, but it's too "clean" looking...maybe their kid blew up his meth lab in the bedroom.
This is between Erie and Longmont where there are a lot of "prairie castles".
There are neighbors, so this would be best visited at night, or during the day while wearing hardhats and orange vests...

This used to be true in rural areas more often than not; but there's an increasing amount of these closed up mega-houses as close as a few hundred yards off 287 in Northglenn.

Cool find.

What's so wrong with Baby Stew?

That house is fascinating! I'm not really surprised at all that a house could sit hidden like that back off the main roads and look fine. I always remember The Mushroom house up on I-70. It always looked fine from afar, but I heard it was in pretty bad shape as you got up to it. Never actually went up to it, but always wanted to. I'm pretty sure someone bought it & renovated it a few years back.

yeah, I think it was in pretty poor shape up until about 8 years ago or so, one of the teachers at my middle school took a group of kids up there for a field trip because he knew the owner or something.

He said that before the current owner renovated it there was 4 feet of snow inside and a family of foxes living there.

Shut the fuck up and ride that fucking Couchmobile!

Could just be an insurance job. You know, have a fire, collect insurance, forget the house and keep the cash, etc. I feel sorry for the landscaping. Those trees all have protection collars at their bases, and are well spaced, but won't make it w/o some TLC. Too bad. Are you going in? Pics please!

I drive a white truck and the hard hat and vest trick works surprisingly well. I even have a metal clip board I leave on the dash - most people don't think twice about what you're doing, so try it and get some photos of the insides.

we do about 200 foreclosure inspections a week driving a mini or an explorer, wearing whatever we feel like that day and have had no trouble so far.just tell anyone that asks you are working for an independant assessment company and you cant really go into any details with anyone except the lienholder or the mortgage participant.nobody really cares and with the economy the way it is there are a a lot of people out doing it.yes it sucks but it sure beats repoing!

Someone quit mid remodel or near the end of a build, there are toe boards on the roof and stickers on the windows that make me think they brand new.

I think the first time I noticed that house was around the mid-90s, so it's at least 10-15 years old. It was definitely occupied until maybe a couple of years ago. I was looking closer at my full-res pics, and the paint is peeling in spots from age.
There were some windows replaced, and work done on the roof, but it looks more like they were sealing it from the weather after a fire. I imagine the upstairs and right side of the house are burnt and smoke-damaged. The rest of it looks intact, though.
I will get out there and take a look...be patient, Canadianrhian!

Interesting. It looks almost as though the county assumed ownership of the house and allowed the fire department to practice on it. The plywood on the left part of the roof looks like ventilation practice.

I shoot photos.

I wonder how long it's been like this, I've driven past this house hundreds of times, but just today saw it in this state. It's a really nice house and the lake is huge, it has three islands.

68flh: If you look on google earth the house to the south of it appears to be it's guest house. There roofs are the same color with similar dormers, one fence surrounds the two of them, and there driveways connect. I'd look to see if that house is abandoned too, before checking this one out.

I will post a reply soon!

I have photos of expensive homes here in the valley i worked for centex homes and i got a map from them of homes abandoned like really nice homes un finished.

Here is a few locations,

val vista and chandler height kiddie corner to the cow farm 4 homes all lined up avg about 200.000'ish most are built some need the roofs finished. tiles all broken all blown off one has the garage door on the ground waiting for the person to install it that will never come. Empire road and hunt highway aka ellsworth and empire rd intersection there is a home that priced i was told 300.000 plus and has not been finished the wood is yellow now and is a total loss, I know everything about this side of the valley. greenfield road between riggs and queen creek road has about 9 or so abandoned homes some large. The secont home on greenfield has stuff in it tv's clothes beds looks like they took what they could and left the rest!

I will upload some photos soon!

yeah, i was looking at all the new areas locally that were at one time just blowing up, but now, they are in forclosure and its sad to see some of the houses that people have been forced out of. as much as i hate to admit i was watching oprah, but she had a journalist by the name of ms ling that went on some of the cleaner jobs that this guy has. he basically just trashes everything that is left in a house, and takes it to the landfill. and its not junky stuff, these are peoples belongings. someone left behind a huge TV, and another left an urn with someone's remains. how trippy is that?
