ya um this is definitely not something the docs should put people on unless they have active psychosis. Especially not a child!! I have also seen it used to treat bipolar but with mixed results in my experience..it tends to only work "well" with severe cases of a dual diagnosis of bipolar & drug addiction with repeated and severe episodes of mania.

In the last 5 or so years current drug of choice has shifted from zyprexa to risperdal (at least in the northeast) in cases where a stronger drug like clozaril is not needed/desired. (and dont even get me started on clozaril!)

Yup. The guy talked to an 11-year-old for about 15 minutes before deciding to put me on it... I know it is 100% my own fault I was put on it. Never lie to a shrink; but then again no one wants to hear the truth either. Just don't waste your time going to them. I didn't bother to research it at all and only I made the decision to go off it when another student made a presentation on it in Biotech class.

My case is more extreme than other people's would be; having Aspergers (which is already a mental limiting disease) and the age/duration I had been put on it for. My entire pre-puberty/teenage developmental stages were impacted.

I've been put on both zyprexa and risperdal as a mood stabilizer (while on effexor or zoloft as antidepressants) for supposed bipolar type II. The times i was on "atypical antipsychotics" i felt exhausted, lethargic, lifeless and numb, i've only ever gone downhill from a psychiatric point of view since they started me on medications. I've been off all medications (except for ativan as needed) for about three years now. I've never felt better. I'd rather die than be put back into the numbness and lifelessness of medications. Coming off them was like jumping back into reality...everything felt so real again...colours were brighter, i felt real feelings (good or bad)...

and as soon as i turned 18 i switched doctors back from my specialist, to my realistic and hesitant to prescribe family doctor. one of the best choices i've ever made.

sorry if I upset anyone, I didn't intend to.

I realize that it can work entirely different on other people; not very suprising seeing as it has 3 A4 sheets worth of side-effects.

I'm not schitzofrenic, but got it against an overload of signals entering my brain which basically gave me mental breakdowns. The weight gain thing wasn't an issue for me either; Even after using it for a few months I'm still 10kg underweight.

So again, I apologize. I meant it a bit jokingly, and I realize sarcasm doesn't travel too well over the internet.

Let's not derail this thread any further, if you feel the need to talk this over with me, feel free to PM me.
