Just curious if anyone has explored some of the cool sites listed on the colorado ghost towns of colorado. There are a bunch in weld county that look awesome.. Many old and new buildings left to explore. The only prob is I don't know if they are still there. If someone could fill me in on this.. It would be cool to photograph some of this... ;)

There's plenty of Ghost Towns on the Eastern Plains, but it'll require some research. Google, Wikipedia and Ghost Towns.com are how I've found places. Things change quick so some towns that were recently inhabited might be Ghost, and some Ghosts may now have people living in them. Just do your research before you go so you're not disappointed and be sure be friendly to the locals and take plenty of photos!

Lol.. Yeah I figured that was the case.. I've done mountain sites but not on the plains.. There looks like a lot of sites in weld. And that's not too far away... I will have to start researching it more, but its cool cause like whole towns are abandoned, and a cool mix of old and new. It would totally be worth the time to drive out.

It would be SO COOL if you'd post all the names and routes openly here!
That way everyone can go and whore them out, PRONTO.

Why don't you drive out and explore for yourself?
This isn't an armchair hobby.

Part of the adventure is just going out there and seeing what you can find. There will be disappointments, but that makes the victories sweeter. Take a long weekend and wander aimlessly. That's what many of us do (see lexiphoto's post).

*Generally* locals are amicable if you approach them, don't sneak around, and respect boundaries. I've never had a problem, even got a neat history lesson from the last remaining resident of a town I explored out East.

Yeah.. Very true. Good advice, that's cool though about the last guy there. Was it like a whole town abandoned? That's the kind of stuff I would love to document. You have any pics of that? Would love to see em.

Generally true BUT . . . .
Kansas is the only place I have ever been shot at while exploring.

The places I remember finding ghost towns the most were around Central City, up around Nevadaville (which is an old mining town), as well as a bunch down by the Sand Dunes. I apologize for not having more details info, as it's been a while since I've been to them, but those are the areas I remember fondly from when I lived in Littleton.

I plan on doing a bit of exploring next time I go out there, but it'll be several months before I make it back out that way.

I would have to agree with quarantine.. There is something cool about the plains.. And just an odd mix of new and old.. Plus a hell of a lot easier to get too lol.. Mountains have a special appeal too but I don't know plains are cool too cause its not as heavily explored like the mountains are.. But they both have their unique draw to them. ;)

Definately do your research because is more depressing then driving a long way away only to find out that a site sucks. I took a backass way through Kansas hitting ghosts and a lot of them weren't worth the trip. I posted some on the Kansas section but they were truly a letdown.

I've had that happen a few times. A few years ago, I drove four hours for a place I saw online (didn't do enough research), only to find it had been demolished/repurposed two months before I made it out there.

I'd love to go driving around scouting for places one of these days. CanadianRhian, you should bring your cat along. I used to have a "touring" kitty that went with us on the road to gigs and such. He used to just hang out on instrument cases, amps, the seat, my lap. He was totally mellow about travelling in the car (no kennel).

Casual mysterious.
