| | | I found some old pictures of the Criddle-Vane Homestead last summer on my computer! To get there: Drive past CFB Shilo until the road turns to dirt. There's a yellow hand-painted sign on the left marking the driveway. The house will be locked. Judging from the number of beer bottles inside, I'm guessing that it hasn't always been closed up. There are some plaques around the property giving history. Some of the stuff from the house is in the little museum in Wawanesa.
Pictures 1-5 are the big house, 9-12 are the little house.
<3 the bug-house doorknob!!! (I have a thing for doorknobs, hehe) They're fixing it up.

I love the transoms too. Imagine how cold that place would be, with only fireplaces for heat. Ugh. It would kill me! I guess that the wallpaper would help keep the drafts from coming in through the cracks. I always love the peeling parts of wallpaper, where I can see the original, old fashioned patterns.

| | | There is actually another house near Carberry where I counted 5 distinguishable layers of wall paper. Its insulation on the upper floor was also tin cans and news paper. Its truly amazing how far we have come since the turn of the 20th century.
