learning to lightpaint
< on 10/29/2008 5:12 PM >

In the past I've dreaded lightpainting, but there are a few locations I have in mind that will absolutely require it. So I started fooling around with it more and here is what I have come up with. I'm finally getting the hang of it.

These were all shot using a handheld flash at ISO 100. It took between 20 and 80 flashes for each picture. They are all straight from the camera, no post processing besides white balance correction.

1. shot at f/22

2. shot at f/22

3. shot at f/9

4. shot at f/9

5. shot at f/22

6. shot at f/16

The first two turned out awesome. You should post up the other version of the second so I can see what it looks like. The third looks like it would be a pain to light up. But good work. On the third I can see where you were popping the flash, I'm not sure if there is some way to hide the flash when you fire it off so that it doesn't show up in the photo.

The third shot took about ten minutes to do, it was a pain. When I post process these I am going to use the clone tool to try to hide those flashes

Here is the other chair pic, I don't like it as much. Its too well lit, it doesn't emphasize the subject as well, and the feel is kinda lost...

i'm damn impressed. the 1st 2 look perfect.

the latter ones you can spot a few spots where the flash went off, but like you said you could process them out. still even if you left them as-is they are nice shots and pretty sweet that you pulled them off with as little light as there is in those places.

I am impressed to see that third one. That area is so much larger than it looks in the picture. I figured one would need one of those million candle power spotlights, but walking along with a hand held flash is an innovative solution.

Very nice. Makes me think I should pick up a used cheapass flash for just these occasions.

awesome photos.
once you process out the flash spots, they'll look really good.

I wish I was as good at light painting as you are.
I just don't have the patience

Gorgeous shots. ^_^ I admire the patience it takes to do that! The lighting looks very natural, something that's missing from most lightpainted rooms.
