| | | Posted by kaj27 Partridge Island isn't being demoed. It's federal property and is monitored by the Coast Guard. There are tunnels and buildings there. It was going to be turned into a tourist spot, but some fuckers messed it up so they closed it. Again, it's not being turned into condos. I drive by it daily.

I didn't mean Partridge island was being demolished i meant the section of land before you cross over to partridge island.

That's lower west. That's been pretty well untouched for years upon years. Now the South end, that's being turned into Condos, office spaces and docks for the Cruise Ships.

| | | Posted by denisjr Speaking of tunnels, I remember when I was young a family friend owned the Moncton Dart Club near Colishaw street and one day I remember being in the office and him showing me a very old map of all the tunnels that ran under that area of the city since it used to be part of the army's barracks during the Second World War. There were alot of tunnels. I believe the tunnels were mostly filled in or collapsed but I always wondered if any were still accessible. This guy knew everything about Parkton so if there was an entrance to the tunnels he would know about it, unfortunately he's passed on now and that map seems to have disappeared, but you never know it might show up one day.
|
Hi. Nope. Tunnels are gone. The best you will find are connections in old basements downtown but that's it.

It's been a long time, so I don't know how accessible the Mispec fort is. With all that Irving's doing out in Red Head, it might have been leveled. If you drive waaaaaay down the Red Head Road, you'll come to the gated entrance to Irving's "Canaport." If you manage to get through that gate, go past where the lake comes close to the road. You'll see an overgrown (was once paved) parking lot. In the far right-hand corner of that parking lot you'll find a path and some ruined outhouses. They look like concrete blocks with toilets smashed off of them. Keep going down that path, and you'll come to some bunkers, and a gun turret, with BREATHTAKING views. While you're out there, take some pictures for me!!! If you have some extra time, when you're done follow the Red Head Road all the way to the end. Go slow past Mispec Beach, because when the road ends, it really freaking ends, just when you get tired of going slow. The road ends at a place called Cape Spencer, which is the most beautiful place in Canada. (IMHO, lol) When you get there, know that I'm jealous of you, because I'm in Manitoba for the next few years!

I work on Canaport. There was once a former defense bunker on the site but it has been levelled for building the LNG terminal. I guess it's part of the mispec fort. I will most probably explore a bit more that part.

| | | ooook, i went to unb for university and had my fair share of access to the ol tunnels. i had a friend who worked for aliant and therefore had the keys to get into the basements of residences etc. did the full run of the university tunnels, up to st thomas, down to the lady beverbrook. never found a connection to any city tunnels that people have spoken about. i will list some other interesting spots for all you fredericton bound folk. on the fredericton side of the westmorland street bridge you can squirm your way inside the steel girder and walk the entire span. or at least a long way, i turned back when i started getting intimidated by the number of pidgeons and the amount of pidgeon shit. me and some friends left some artwork tho. the other bridge further down the river (can't remember the name, but it has the green structure in the center) has a pretty cool cat walk that goes under it out to the center. you can climb the green center structure to the top if you have nerves of steel. ive done it, pretty amazing view. under the north side of this bridge os a graffitti heaven. big spaces where you can lay base and take your time on pieces. don't go fucking up the real artwork tho. ok, there is a storm drain down by the bottom of campus that you can follow at least as far as regent street. thats as far as i ever made it, then my boots sprung a leak, cold water in april let me tell you. goes across by the harveys. i was on top of that big old hotel downtown by the river when they were doing work on it with staging up, but got chased off by security guards, still you can get onto the side roof with a little ingenuity out back. lots of roof tops around the downtown with easy access if you are a good climber, those gas lines are just like ladders, they got me on top of nicky zees. i am sure i could think of some other spots as well given time. but there are some ideas for you

| | | This drain you speak of, was it a walk-upright or a back-breaker? Also: does anyone know anything about the abandoned pool I've heard of? I had heard it was accessible through the LBR, but upon reviewing the blue prints (yes, the original blue prints from its construction) I found nothing like a tunnel entrance. Does anyone have some information to help me out.

| | | " Mispec: (1940 - 1946) Located at Mispec Point, originally planned for three 9.2-inch guns, but replaced with three 7.5-inch naval guns, emplaced in 1940 on concrete mounts with steel shields, with three concrete magazines. Gun positions #2 and #3 still exist. Position #1, now destroyed, is on the site of the present-day Irving Canaport. The entire site was camouflaged to resemble a fishing village. A Battery Observation Post was built in 1940 on the hill behind the point (still exists). A second Port War Signal Station was built nearby in 1939. A fire-control radar tower was built here in 1943." More information can be found here, from Heritage Resources and NBCC 2008: http://www.saintjo...ess/FortMispec.htm October 2006. Irving LNG. Here you may see a few buildings and a gun mount, but I would have to have someone else confirm if those are some of the old military buildings: http://www.canapor...ct2006_highres.jpg And with that said, you have just read about all there is to find out there on Fort Mispec. But if anyone has more about it, tunnel layouts, bunkers, pictures...it may be the last time we have any view of this tangible history. -Capt.Fox [last edit 10/14/2010 1:11 AM by Capt.Fox - edited 1 times]
