| | | Fellow explorer Boghaunter and I explored what remains of the Cold War era rocket testing range near Churchill Manitoba. The range was scaled back or closed permanently since the 60s or 70s, and closed completely in the 90s.
Many of the doors were locked up tight
Boghaunter even thought to try to squeeze in here... au loup is definitely too wide!
Some of the large overhead doors had gaps, and we could fit a camera underneath
Long tunnels connected the buildings
Not sure about this mode of transport...
Getting discouraged, but after we'd gone almost all the way around...
Jackpot! The aerobee missile launch tower (sorry about the stitching)
A few areas were accessible
Apparently leaving that door open was REALLY bad...
The interior of a tunnel that leads to a locked door... would have entered the area under an overhead door without the crazy giant vehicle
The buildings still had electricity... at least the box was humming
eyewash anyone?
Other neat equipment...
I believe you are supposed to fill your respirator equipment with this, not just shove the bottle up your nose as the label implies
Creepy plasma IV thing on the wall
When we were leaving, ravens living in the top of the rocket tower started screaming (and there was a good echo in there, too). Thanks to Boghaunter for saving me from the ferocious birdies ;)

You might have seen the "tundra buggies" that they use for polar bear tours... I think this might have been an early incarnation of one of those. There was a similar huge camo vehicle parked outside not far from that door, and that was our guess for what it was. I took a pic, but the light was terrible and it didn't turn out well.

That is because you can only access it by rail or air. Both take a significant amount of time and or money to reach just for an exploration.

Ok... that affects the accessibility rating, and perhaps explains why no one has added it yet, but I think it would be a great addition to the DB. Surely others out there have been and can add some pics. [last edit 8/23/2008 5:49 PM by PhotoSeeker - edited 1 times]

| | | Churchill has quite a bit to see in terms of old war stuff if you scower just outside. I really wanted to get an up close look at the boat thats lodged in the bay, didn't have time though.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you. |

Thanks to Au Loup for putting up the pictures! I have to say my favourite part was the long, dark tunnel which joined the missile launch building with the 'garage' where the big tundra buggy was parked. I'm sure there's abandoned stuff all over Canada's North just waiting to be re-discovered. There's always the added rush of possible polar bear attacks! Oh yeah, some of you Winnipeg UE'ers out there know me, though you may not realize it. sick hearts and Kamp Koala took me and my boyfriend (not yet on here) out to the Stockyards one rainy night this summer. If you guys are reading this, how about that paper mill, eh? I'm still down, as is the boy.

I'm pretty sure the "tundra buggy" in pic 9 was a close up view of a four wheeler. Cool pics though. I keep telling myself I'm gonna go exploring around here but 90 hour work weeks kinda put a crimp on them plans and then I injure myself and now I'm not allowed out.

Yes, cause when I lie down everything suddenly looks huge to me, and I forget how it looked when I was standing up. Seriously, it did indeed have four wheels, and they were each about 3 1/2 feet in diameter. [last edit 8/31/2008 2:49 PM by Au Loup - edited 1 times]

| | | The tires shown in image 9 are those of a quad (ATV) not that of a Tundra Buggy; the buggies have VERY wide tires (that also use more than 4 lugnuts) so that they don't sink into the moss and permafrost which is sometimes quite soft, in addition to leaving the ground squished rather than all torn up... The Crows/ravens up there are HUGE! (as are the insects) And Churchill is quite remote, it's an 8hr drive to Thompson and then a 12-24hr train ride to Churchill from there... It is also possible to fly there, however it is very expensive. There is tons of wildlife (beluga, wolf, fox, many birds) to see while up there; there was also an old barracks there with a water tower before they tore it down... I've also been told that there are other military tunnels around the area however they've been flooded etc... Watch out for bears; afterall it's the polar bear capital of the world [last edit 9/3/2008 8:12 AM by DEV1L - edited 1 times]

| | | Hi, In response to the ATV comment, it is always possible that the vehicle inside was a 4-wheeler; I didn't get a picture of it. BUT, the one parked outside was definitely not a 4-wheeler. Or it was a 4-wheeler for a GIANT!! Check out the Nanuk 1!

| | | im 100% positive thats a consumer grade ATV in #9....the plastic fenders, warning stickers, rim design & assembly all give it away. Im sure the army uses ATV's in special situations, but what you've shown here is most definitely not a vehicle designed specifically for the military...they wouldnt affix a warning label on the outside of a special purpose cold-weather vehicle using a vinyl sticker...it would shrivel up and peel off in no time...only a civilian manufacturer could get away with that kinda thing. regardless...that was an awesome set...looks like a killer location. Its a shame that greater lengths werent taken to preserve more of the historical military infastructure of that (or any) era.... did you go out there specifically to explore this place?
