| | | So i was just wondering about the phrase when it rains, no drains and i was wondering how long you should wait after the rain to go draining. how long do you wait [last edit 8/14/2008 4:48 PM by Chris Hansen - edited 1 times]

| | | Until the drain is back to normal levels - which depends on the style of drain; a strong storm can cause the rivers/creeks to rise, thus keeping the tunnel flooded for a day or two before it's wise to re-enter. Drains that are just collection basins for sidewalk grates though, I've gone in two-three hours after it's stopped raining and the forecast says the rain isn't returning. A good hint is just to stop at one of the manhole covers and listen for the gurgling; and most importantly, have the balls to be willing to turn back if you get there and the water "isn't quite as low as you'd like", or the forecast "not quite so clear as you'd like".

| | | Like Yehoshua said, it really depends on the drain you plan on entering. Depending on the size of the catch mat it can take a day or two for the system to completely flush itself. Also keep in mind, if your climbing down a drain with any kind of sanitary overflow.. it may stink to high hell if you go down right after a heavy storm. So for some, that might be another reason to give it a couple days. Just go check it out. Use your better judgment.

| | | Give it a good 6 hours before entering, gives time for any seepage to enter the drain as well as direct run off. Some drains need longer, but most will just be ankle or shin deep within a short time. Of course be careful and check the level before going too far. If your not comfortable with how it looks, feels or smells after rain, don't risk it, come back in a day or two. Personally I don't drain within 3-6 hours of light rain, 1-3 days from prolonged multi day rains or heavy falls. The longer it has rained the longer you need to wait due to seepage taking its time to drain out of the surrounding earth
