Saint John, Baxter's Corner Transmitter

Hey all. I never post so consider this a miracle.

A fellow UEer and I recently took a trip to an old, what appears to be no longer in use, transmission tower. This is located just outside of Saint John, NB. What is known as Baxter's Corner. The drive is fun if you like dirt roads and hills.

Brief history of the place. From what I found it use to belong to Fundy Cable, anyone remember them? Well NBTel got ahold of it and now of course Aliant. Well The tower use to house some microwave drums, all removed now. Only thing that remains is a few VHF folded Dipole Antennas. The gate up to the tower is never locked anymore, the barb on the fence has long since fallen down and someone cut a hole in the fence to squeeze through.

I'll get right to some pictures, you can ask questions if you'd like

Standing just a ways away. This tower isn't as tall as most. My GPS said I was 295' above sea level here.

Top of the tower, you can see the folded dipoles.

1st half of the buildings, this clearly was the oldest part.

2nd part, the 'new' building.

Guy wires, make no mistake these are HUGE.

Towers always amaze me, how they can stand

Looking up into the tower.

Where power and possibly data comes out to head up the tower. The lights still come on at night on the tower.

Back side of the brick building.

On the backside of the brick building there is a cast iron door. About 2'x2'. It's clearly a crawl space. There is also one of these near the roof. Both are wide open.

This is the ground crawlspace. Looking straight in.

Looking to the left, you can see a cable coming through this opening.

And to the right, pretty much nothing.

We didn't get much of a chance to explore any further. The sun was setting quite quick. We intend to check out that 'opening' in the crawlspace. And the other cast iron door near the roof. I'll keep people posted.

Thanks

Cool place, might have to check that out next time I'm in NB.

Have faith only in those who you trust. And hold who you trust close to you for you have no idea when you will need them most.

Nice shots, and an interesting location at least for radio geeks ;)

Is this the location?

http://maps.google...=h&z=12&iwloc=addr

If so there are quite a few radio licenses associated with it - listed as "active" though that doesn't mean they really are:

Hey thanks for the licenses. But the location you posted is not it. If you punch in this..... 45.370350, -65.772740 You'll see it

I am an Electrical Engineering Student so these things do interest me.

Yup, I screwed up the map link somehow. But the results from Spectrum Direct do match the coordinates you gave.

Which makes total sense too, Thanks for the site

The VHF band is 30Mhz to 300Mhz, and these frequencies you posted fall directly into it.

Cab companies, go figure.

Excellent post, I always wondered about New Brunswick.

Was the tower stable? Could you have climbed it?

Oh yes the tower is totally stable. We made a short climb to check out the roof and area. Nothing too high, it's slightly windy up there!

If anyone local is interested. I am setting up a tour with an Aliant Network Engineer. I just have to pick a tower.

Anyone here have any good shots of the old general hospital? I was in and out of that thing so many times but never thought to take photos. I am an urban explorer in Saint John, New Brunswick, so if anyone knows of any good sites I would really like to know. Seems like Saint John tears things down before anyone can crawl through them.
