| | | Hey, I'm a 14 year old kid who wants to be a Urban Explorer. I have a pretty accurate list of places that I can get to, including, yes, the State Hospital. That would be my "holy grail" of Urban Exploring. I want to get in there, no matter what. Since I'm young, I don't really have a good camera, mine's a Kodak EasyShare C653, but Photography is an interest of mine. Three things absorb my life, Music, Ikki Tousen and hopefully, Urban Exploration. I had friends, before I moved here...My deepest desire is to meet a girl who looks like Kan'U Unchou from Ikki Tousen, and go Urban Exploring with her. Ridicoulous? Yes. Silly? Yes. Truth? Yes. I like rock in general (Metal, Alternative, etc.), like Iron Maiden, Bloc Party, Nine Inch Nails, KISS, Aerosmith, Slipknot, and The Fall of Troy. My mom has to work nights now, from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM, so that's pretty much the only reason why I can do this...Otherwise, I'd be screwed, cos I don't really wanna do it during the day. I pretty much don't have any friends here, in Norwich, I'm a loser, basically. So, friends is one of the reasons why I wanna do this. I also like graffiti. I will NEVER do it, but I admire it. It all stems from meeting a tagger in Middletown...His name was Virus. He was a nice guy, and since then, out of 6 taggers met, he was the most helpful. The others were pretty nice, but Virus, he changed my whole outlook on life. My whole fascination with abandoned buildings is thanks to him. I respect taggers thanks to him, and I cannot change that. Now, I got a few questions: 1) Is the area on River Avenue ok? I'm not sure what they are, but it looks like the dump or something... 2) Where are some decent places I go? I know, all the fun is finding them yourself, but hey, gotta start somewhere, right? Thanks, Malachai (Atno000)

You said it yourself- find them. You seem to know of one or two areas, try them. It doesn't matter what sort of camera you have, if you even have a camera. If you're interested in old buildings, just go try it out. You may like being an "Urban Explorer." You may not. I doubt you'll be able to form this opinion based on what a bunch of people on the internet tell you, so just go walk into some abandonment and find out if you do.
Get down, girl, go 'head, get down. |

| | | Nice to meet you buddy. I am glad you have taking an interest in UE. Everyone should have a healthy dose of history to keep them sensible. Go find your sites yourself, walk around town, watch the buildings they will scream abandoned after a while. Enjoy them, make them your friends and take care of them. Teach people the history of your town, state and country through the buildings that people have left behind. Try not to harm the buildings though. I don't agree with tagging and vandalism, but each person makes their own choices and who am I to judge? I can try to influence though. The best thing about UE in my opinion, to quote Lexi, a very good friend of mine "UE is seeing the world and the city from the inside out, where most people see it from above, or from street level looking in." We see things in a totally different manner on a lot of occasions and this allows us to really appreciate that which has come before us. Welcome, and have a good time.

| | | Welcome. If you've got a list, or just one location, go ahead and visit it. I personally rarely get to build up a whole list; I tend to visit local sites as fast as I can find them. You never know how intriguing a place will be until you visit it. Explorers don't just go to the "decent" places, they go in the destroyed and emptied places as well. Exploring is more about finding new places than making redundant visits. Don't worry about your camera; you don't need one to go exploring at all, it just helps. Just take the first place you can think of an go check it out.

| | | Alright then, this Thursday night, I'm going to the abandoned train-yard...or whatever. The problem is: I'm not sure what it is. Guess I'll find out soon, eh? But ever since I learned about UE, I've been really getting into the history of Norwich. Also, on the graffiti note, just learn to embrace it, that's what I do, unless it ruins something perfect, (state hospital, etc.), then it should be ok. | | | You would be surprised what you can find when you realize what is the look of an abandoned property. The best way to tell if a site is abandoned is to look at the windows, in my opinion. Also, nighttime is usually not the best time to explore sites, because trespasses are expected and flashlights are easy to see. I actually learned this lesson the first time at the hospital you mentioned. My partner and I were walking up to the site when we were immediately stopped and questioned by CT state cops. This led to my motto of "Don't try to be delta force, it gets you caught."

| | | Hmm, that would suck, if I got caught walking around at 4 AM at night, with a camera, no parent, and my mother is at work...Alright, I'll see what I can do tomorrow. One problem though...What if there are guard dogs or something? That would really suck, cos I have mild cynophobia. Tomorrow, when I get up (around 2-5), I'll go. Look forward to the pictures.

| | | don't discount exploring during the day...... particularly if you are alone this could be the safest option for you as well make safe decisions.... perhaps chose your first exploration based on ease of access, safety etc...take a mobile phone if you have one, take a friend or at least email someone and let them know what your up to...

| | | I kinda woke up, 10 hours earlier than I planned, so I will be conforming to your ideals, and going at 1:00 PM. Day or Night, I'm really looking forward to it. The next place I have planned is next week, there is an abandoned Mini-Golf Course on Water Street, so that should be interesting. Well...Seven hours to go. One small problem though, should I start a new thread, or just post the results here?

If there are guard dogs they are usually neglected. Take some time to befriend them. If you show up a few times, feed them, and pay attention to them, they will be happy to see you.

I'd start a new thread in the Northeast section. I think more locals might notice it (and possibly help) there.

| | | FINALLY! A person (around) my age (besides Lexi) who can actually type in full sentences! Welcome to the site man. As it was said before, asking for locations is generally frowned upon. So go out there and explore! The quality of your camera doesn't really matter too much anyhow.
