Halifax - Transmitter House - Trashed

I know a few regulars from this forum visited the old CHNS transmitter house in April this year. I don't know what it was like then, but I just visited today, and the place is completely trashed now. It has significantly deteriorated since when I was there before. I guess that's the inevitable result of having an unguarded building, nowhere near homes or businesses, with a convenient parking lot...

Anyway, here are a few of today's pictures.

Miserable low cloud today made the place look and feel even more desolate than it really is. Note that windows are open on every level - this winter could do real structural damage to the building.

Pretty much every piece of equipment that isn't literally bolted to the building is either smashed up, pulled outside, or both.

It's heartbreaking. I'm angry at the people who would do this kind of thing.

You're looking at the underside of the engineer's console. Looks pretty heavy. Probably took some effort to tip it over. But why do it?

The iconic CHNS green phone can be found on the path to the first antenna tower.

At least the towers still stand, stark against the low cloud. It's hard to believe that these structures at least aren't commercially valuable to someone, but they do seem to be quite dead. Not even the aircraft hazard beacons are operating.

Yeah, the place got trashed literally the day after I went there the first time. It's really too bad, because it was such an awesome location. And it looks like somebody tipped the console over again.

It makes you think though. In the eyes of the average member of the public, or even the average police officer, there's not really any difference between the vandals who break into and wreck these places, and those of us who just want to explore, and who would never do any damage.

Yeah, that's fairly comprehensively fucked over.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Does anyone know what the current legal situation is with this place? Who owns it? Is it a heritage property? If not, it should be. There is a lot of history in that building. With the state it's in, I'm certainly not interested in it from a UE point of view any more - it's just too far gone. I'd rather see it saved and secured. Otherwise I don't see it lasting too many more years.

When N250cc and I went there, we saw an old guy walking his dog, and he said that CJCH still owns/owned it and would come every few months to take more and more out. But ever since it got trashed, I don't think they've come back. I can see exactly what this is becoming: Halifax's Beaver Bank Villa, so far gone that it's not even worth seeing anymore.

Halifax - Transmitter House - It's gone!

I went out for a random drive around this evening and found myself back up there. "That's funny," I thought, "you can hardly see the building through this low cloud."

And then I realised I couldn't actually see it at all.

I had to get out and walk to the patch of mud where the transmitter house used to be before I really believed it. It's just not there any more.

The place has been demolished within the last couple of days - pretty weird for me since I was just there on Sunday night. I'm glad I took those pictures though...

I'm really sad about this. This was such an iconic building with a huge amount of history. It's a terrible waste.

The radio towers are still there, which makes me thing the building was probably demolished just because of the liability risk with all the kids trashing the place, rather than because they plan to build something new there. It's a great shame either way.

Thparkth.

No kidding, I'm glad I got the before and after pics done before this, I'll have to take a run up there when I get the car back for finale pics.

At least no one can blame any UEers for the damage that was done. I haven't seen any public discussion anywhere of how to get into the building, even after it was trivially obvious.

All the same, I think this shows the value of having restricted access to the full location database - something that pains me to admit as a basic member ;).

What was the timeframe here from being "discovered by the local youth" to being demolished? A few months? Kind of disturbing.

Well if you think about it, if the transmitter house was in a way more secluded area, then the radio company probably would have just said screw it, and leave it where it's at.
My guess is that they tore it down because it was a safety hazard, and they'd be liable for anybody getting hurt. So to change that, you could either have it monitored by police, or destroy the liability.
