OH SHIT!
| | Question for drainers < on 7/9/2008 4:46 PM >
| | | I was along one of my favorite stretches on a river for finding good outfalls, and I came across this massive steel door. It appeared to be covering a big drain, it was 7-8ft tall and 14-15ft in width. There was also this odd, sort of synthetic, factory type smell, emanating from it. has anyone else come across one of these, or any ideas as to whats behind it, or what the smell is?

| | | Not that I know what it is, but how was it hinged? Hinges at the top, one side, both sides, not hinged but sliding? Does it open? Could water flow through or was it completely sealed? Some more info might help the research. Then again, some other members around here know a lot more than I do and someone may know what it is right away.

| | | Yeah, i knew i should have gotten some pics of it but I didn't have a camera with me. Its hinged at the top and thats it, water could flow out the bottom, but there wasn't anything coming out but that awful smell, it is like a paper mill mixed with the dump, its a very unique smell.

| | | It sounds like a big flapper... a floated hatch that opens when the water level and pressure on the other side is great enough... they're often put in to prevent backflow in case of flooding. I've never seen one as big as what you describe, but there are 6' versions I have run into. I'll try to scrape up a picture and see if it matches.

Awesome info. I've never seen one personally, but from what the thread starter described and what you are saying, those pieces seem to fit very nicely together. Seems very plausible.

Yes, this has to be what it is, it makes perfect sense because its right on the river, but any ideas on the smell?

| | | There's a door similar to that in Bolton. It's only about 6 feet tall and quite impossible to open. If memory serves correct, it led to some kind of ancient wood ceilinged storage tank full of stagnant water, and not much else. Go open it, maybe your's has more treasure behind it

| | | Yeah, I really want to know whats behind it, because its huge! The only problem is it must be around 1000lbs, so I was thinking, car jack?

| | | yeah, sure, behind a loading dock by Jacobus park, on the north bank of the menoemeniee river right across from hawthorn glen. You have to go through the loading dock parking lot but it is hardly ever very active. Do they really let raw sewage directly into the river when it rains enough? There's some great stuff on there - anyone visited the Deep Tunnel system?

Would it be worth using that angle, and ask for a guided tour? If you only knew who the tunnel nerds were in the organisation, and could ask the right person...

I looked because thats exactly my thinking if I could just pop a cover and gain access to the tunnel, without dealing with that huge door. But alas, none in sight but I didnt look that hard, so I suppose its still an option. As for the deep tunnel, when I did my first drain I thought, what if we could find a way into the deep tunnel? . . . But after thinking about it I dont think it is a plausible goal.

| | | I think it's plausible... but also borderline suicidal. I'd personally only do if it to get one or two pictures... idk if I'd be up for exploring it. But then again, the highest section of the deep tunnel is about 15 minutes from here... where it changes from a regular sewer line to the deep tunnel, at 155 feet down. It's plausible... if I really really trusted the people I was going with, was an expert climber, was doing it in the dead of january when there's minimal chance of runoff, extreme amount of protective gear for going down the shoot with the poo, etc. etc. Personally I think it's borderline suicidal, but who knows? 2,3 years maybe it won't seem that way.
