| | | Some insulator collectors did this location in 2002 and 2006, following the powerline. Is that the only way to access the powerhouse, or is there a way following an abandoned powerline into there from cripple creek? both powerlines used rare insulators on them, the line to pueblo used Locke-25s which were all-glass and because there arent but a handfull of whole ones in the hobby, they pull in an easy $2500+. There are pieces of them all along the line. The line to Cripple Creek used R. D. Mershon and Boch patented insulators, which were made of porcelain. They are also quite rare. I was gonna hotlink some pics but i cant get ti to work, so heres the url instead Locke-25 http://www.insulat...tures/?id=83947995 boch patent http://www.insulat...ures/?id=163189539 mershon patent http://www.insulat...tures/?id=32814833 powerhouse: http://www.insulat...tures/?id=92355664

from what i've read, you can get close, but the last 3 or so miles are very hairy if you're following the "line" from the canon city area.

| | | I looked at topos and that old road just looks like it could be a deathwish with the bridges out. I would like to try, but I bet we'd get there faster walking. No point in trying and then wasting most of the day and not getting there. We could scout it out on the way back. I'd bet a sixer it is impassable. And does anyone know a place I can go and buy that pass or sticker or whatever? I won't have time to get one in the mail before I leave anymore. Or I could pay someone back if it's just something you can pick up easily. [last edit 7/19/2008 5:02 PM by junkyard - edited 1 times]

| | | I love coming back to these forums after a hiatus to find things like these. If you'll have me, I'll try and make it aug. 6-8, though my employers may get pissed (I just requested 4 days off to go caving down in the wet mountains). I'd love to go though, sounds like a good time.

| | | Otay, you can get the $10 stamp at most any sporting goods store, also like every Wal-Mart. I'm gonna do that, they are easy enough to find. My group is going on Aug 8th like at the butt crack of dawn. That's a Friday, so anyone will only have to take one day off most likely. I suggest we camp at the resevoir. Take 67 south off of 24, West of Colorado Springs. Goes past Pikes Peak and through Cripple Creak and Victor. Looks like FR 861 / Skaguay Rd, East out of Victor. We're camping out the night of the 7th. I've got a Coleman stove and may or may not have any firewood left. Bring beer, some good local stuff and brats, burgers, whatever you want. Make sure to bring plenty of water and some snack stuff for the hike, granola bar type shit, sandwiches, whatever you want. This will be a LONG day, no whiners. I would bring at least a gallon of water per person, it will get lighter as you go anyway Plus you can drink all you can before we leave, I don't think anyone will see you pee. Worst case is we can drink out of the stream, might get sick, maybe no, but it's better than being dead. And make sure your belly is full before we go. I just wanted to stress this because my first time at Gilman I ended up sharing my 2 qts of Gatorade with 2 other people. One of them was some sort of super explorer the past few days according to him, yet he forgot to bring anything for an all day trip to an abandoned town. Must have figured that the water still worked.....

Gotta love macho-man-tough guys. There's a few people who won't ever go underground with me again for exactly that reason. Dammit, I'm sounding responsible and not drunk, aren't I. Lemme try schlurringk my wordshh. How'ssh that?
