hey guys. i'm a newbie to this whole thing and i'm planning a trip to jerome. my question is, is there anything (other than mines) worth looking at that hasn't been turned into a "art house"? The place used to be a ghost town when i was a kid, but my last few trips up, the whole town seems pretty crouded. any tips? thanks!

Jerome is pretty cool but there's not a whole lot of going on besides the mines. You hit the nail on the head by using the word "art house". We're kind of cursed in this state because land is worth so much. There are some exceptions but in most cases a building doesn't sit abandoned for long. It's either torn down to build a new strip mall or turned into the infamous "art house". Keep digging though, there are some nuggets out there.

when i went to jerome in 94 there were a few abandoned houses and the mining facilities, all of which had intact offices. they were a trick to get into, but were decently fun for az, which is pretty devoid of interesting abandonments imo

I went to Jerome once because that's where TOOL's lead singer Maynard lives. It's not much - it kind of reminded me of towns in Southern Utah and Norther Nevada. If you're nearby it's not a bad place to go but I wouldn't go to far out of the way to go there.

Ah Maynard, yes he does live there and the locals see him quite regularly. I've been to his vineyard. He makes some tasty wine.

There is a lot of abandoned houses in Jerome and there's the famous Jerome Jail that slid down Cleopatra slope a few hundred feet after a landslide in the 1910's. If you follow the cliffs closely, you'll notice several abandoned buildings, old concrete and stone foundations. Just make sure they are stale before jumping and walking on them. Also check out behind the commercial buildings on the main drag. I'll try to post some pictures I took a few weeks ago when I get home.

Here are some pics of Jerome I took a few weeks ago. They are not necessarily the best photos, but it can give an idea of what's out there. The first 3 ones are from the jail. The graffiti beside the bed said "It was more fun in Hell".

Hey that's a nice set of pics man! I especially like the one with all the doors to nowhere. You've totally inspired me to make a trip to Jerome! Not to mention it's going to be 110 in the valley this weekend.

Thanks. Yep, it'll probably be a lot cooler in altitude...Or at least I hope so for your own good:o). The great thing about Jerome is that it is so touristy that nobody will bother or even notice you if you sneak and peek everywhere. Have a cold beer on the terrace of the Haunted Hamburger and enjoy the view for me!

PS- I noticed some (blocked) tunnels going into the cliffs, maybe you could investigate them more. I live a few thousand miles away so it's kinda hard for me to make the trip down there to explore any further.

Or if you drive a ways you will find some not blasted shut. The whole state is one giant piece of swiss cheese.

Jerome is weak sauce. It was probably cool 30 years ago, when it was actually abandoned.

On a recent visit I saw both the typical sights and a few of the not-so typical ones. Checked out the Douglas Mansion and the main drag with the sliding jail, the theater museum, the art galleries, and I had a delicious Haunted Hamburger. When I ventured off the main roads I found an old Catholic church that was open (regular services are every 3 weeks) and an old cemetary with graves from the 1900's. Most of them were unmarked but a few with headstones were mostly immigrants from Ireland and Italy, and one soul who fought in the Spanish-American war! Definitely worth a visit, though the boarded-up abandonments are few and far between in this area.
