NOT a "cop", but...?
< on 5/25/2008 2:22 AM >

Okay, so I just finally painstakingly waited for the 7-day "you can't post" period to go by, and was about to post in the new member introductions thread just to introduce myself and point out my rare situation... but... then I saw a post from someone that just said "Cop.", as if it was a horrible, dirty, filthy, and illegal thing. And it was followed up with an unbelievably defensive post by the person that wrote the quoted post... kinda disturbed me.

So, well, here's the reason I'm posting this. I am NOT any kind of law enforcement person. But I am very soon going to be a security guard at a local guard company (if I can have my way!). Now, what's interesting about that is that the listings here point out "security guard" as a security measure (as a bad thing). Well... I'm fascinated with UE, and my best friend (who is a guard getting me this job) toured me around one of the locations he was patrolling and got me back into it! So I think I'd have quite the upper hand in checking out cool new locations, considering as though I'm the only thing standing between me and that new location! No guards to worry about. And let me tell you, if I ever found a UE'er at a location I'm watching (and I can say this for my friend too), I wouldn't shoo you away, I'd give you a guided tour.

So with that, I'm kinda curious... what was with the "Cop" remark? Is there a big difference between "cop" and "guard"? And more importantly, am I even welcome here?

Thanks!

1. Welcome to UER

2. Not all cops are bad, but they are the people who's attention we would rather avoid.

3. I did not read your post in the intro thread so I could be way off. But if it said something to the effect that you are new to the forums but not UE and that you want to meet up with people with out showing pictures or sharing any real stories; then some people may think it sounds fishy. Even if they know you are not a cop, it's UER...so they will take a shot at you. That shit like that with a grain of salt. The longer you are around, the more you will understand that it is very much part of this community's charm.

That was me with the cop statement.

I say ridiculous and mean-spirited things like that because I was sexually abused by a security guard.

Well....

1) My reply was a bit overboard. The person was trying to provoke me. I actually intended for it to be humorous, but that is hard to convey via the written word.

2) You surely understand that cops are bad news for Urban Explorers. We are breaking the law by trespassing.

3) I used to be in armored security. I drove and/or rode in armored vehicles and delivered millions of dollars to various locations. When we entered these locations, any cops that were there would immediately leave. Several told me that there was no way they would stick around when we were bringing in that much money. That lowered my opinion of them significantly.

I apologize for alarming you. That was pretty stupid of me, especially since I am a new member myself.

Hah, no worries. I was concerned that security people weren't welcome here at all, not just based on those posts! So, awesome. I can't wait to get my first pictures! Even further (and I hope not to raise suspicion), I can't wait to be able to see what people have already checked out in this city. It's definitely exciting (and even a little scary), and I can't believe I'm going to be getting paid to do it!

And yeah, it is trespassing, but I can hardly believe people would be so narrow-minded as to have a problem with people whose motto is "take only pictures, leave only footprints". They should be more concerned about preventing taggers and other vandals/thieves, not curious explorers.

Now, off with me to make my grand introduction in the appropriate thread.

Welcome to UER!

My good friend is a security guard and we both go patrolling the local campus together. It certainly helps being friends with the security guard.. especially when he has the keys to everything!

I got a handjob from a security guard once. Of course I was a security guard at the time and it was from me. I wish I had thought to bring my camera to work one time. I had a fairly large site full of condos in various states of construction all to myself. Oh well.

Unfortunately, they are. I've met some guards that are fucking awesome, but I've also met some that were fucking dicks. So why take the chance? I'm not going to let myself get caught under the assumption that the guard will be a nice guy.

me and brooks got caught in the park and ride at a state hospital in conn, my battery died in my car, and he gave me a jump.

he knew that we were inside. but he didnt really care because he knew we were photographers and nt scrappers. and he told us all kids of information about the place.

we tried to get a picture with him, but he wouldnt.

i offered him a cheap bottle of companage that i had in my car, and he was excited he said he was alone and very bored. he said he was gunna get drunk, and do his rounds. we have been there a few times since. and when we see him we go up to the truck and talk with him, he is wicked cool.

so not all security guards are dick heads, alot of them are on a power trip.
but as long as you show them respect they will normally do the same

Well, that's kinda the thing... I, myself, am soon going to be one of those "freaking awesome" security guards you'd love to find. So it's good to see that I can still have the best of both worlds - a job, and a kickass hobby, and not have them be mutually exclusive ;)

And I'll be sure to pack my camera each and every night I'm on the job... not just for the job, of course! Sounds like a great idea.

Like any profession, you'll encounter good cops and bad ones. I've been fortunate to run into mostly good cops over the years.

Then again, I work as a Bylaw Enforcement Officer myself (in some places also known as Special Constable) - and as such have a good rapport with many of our local cops - some of whom are personal friends. Several of them know about my abandoned location photography and I've yet to talk with one who had a problem with it.

You can always tell when you're watching Canadian television - the actors in the show are the same ones doing the commercials.

Well, figured I'd catch people up a little... hadn't posted in a while, don't want to seem like a "hmm, that's strange, posting about being a security guard then taking off, hrm" kind of guy. xD

For a while, I almost lost that job opportunity. I was hired at (rather, offered the "do you still need a job? can you come in for orientation on Wednesday?" kind of thing) Wal-Mart to push carts. Desperate for a job, I agreed, and since the orientation for that fell on the same day as the security guard class, I had to take the Wal-Mart job and forget the class (and security job).

Come today... I got a call from the friend that was getting the job, saying that the manager was so desperate for a guard, he'd hire me on the spot and get me through that class. The class is tomorrow morning, same as my Wal-Mart orientation. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to have to do it, but I called up Wal-Mart and told them I was no longer available for the job. I had to decline a job offer. To think, for 4 months I was searching for a job, and come today, I had to turn down one. Ugh.

But it looks like I'm still in the works to be getting some epic awesome places checked out soon.
