| | Ethical Dilemma < on 5/21/2008 8:59 PM >
| | | Near my home, there's an old trestle bridge. The underside is easily accessible, and as such is covered in graffiti. I'm just as much against the practice of putting graffiti up as most other people on this board, but I'm torn as to what to do with graffiti already up. Is it more ethically responsible to repaint the underside of the bridge, restoring it to its original state and erasing the last maybe 100 years of wear on it? Or is it more ethically responsible to leave the graffiti where it is, respecting the 100 years or so of wear and tear on it and leaving it as a sign of the structure's publicness? Keep in mind that the bridge is a tourist destination, completely unguarded, and the underside is easily accessible by anyone who decides to take a side path.

| | | This'll get locked in a heartbeat but here's a simple suggestion: You don't own that bridge, and while I don't condone spray painting it in the least, why repaint it? It'll just get tagged again, you'll waste time and energy attempting to repaint something that isn't yours (and possibly buy the wrong type of paint in the process that'll just flake off). Unless you have access to a high-powered sprayer, just enjoy it for what it is. Beat the crap out of any kids you stumble across spray-painting the place, if it'll make you feel better. Or turn your power-washer towards them. [last edit 5/21/2008 9:08 PM by hydrotherapy - edited 1 times]

| | | Oh man, ethics thread. Get out your asbestos undies. Ethics are for you to judge. Don't let anybody make those decisions for you.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

Believe it or not,you can get in just as much legal trouble for repainting it.

My point was why risk getting arrested and being tagged a vandal to repaint a bridge that does not belong to you. All you would be doing is giving the vandals a new canvas anyway.

You asked for an opinion. I gave it to you. It better to be cynical then naive. Every building or structure has a cycle, good or bad. [last edit 5/21/2008 9:29 PM by suicidepactphoto - edited 1 times]

| | | Don't do it, unless the jurisdiction or owner plans to clean it up, then you can volunteer your time. The problem with painting over graffiti is it leaves a nice canvas for new taggers. It may not look pretty, but in some cases, it shows off it's neglect. I've seen the same thing in a lava cave in CA. At the very end of an off-limits section, there is alot of graffiti with names. No attempt has been made to remove it. It's cool because some of it dates back to the 40's, or so the years say.

Well put! While it would be tempting to repaint the bridge, it's best to leave it alone. It's not yours and as mentioned before, will just give a fresh canvas for the taggers. Of course, if a local group gets together to clean up the bridge (or start one yourself) and get the owners' permission, go for it. Just my 2 cents worth here.

| | | Go ahead and repaint it. The graf kids will love you for giving them a fresh canvas. Seriously though.. what bridge doesn't have graffiti of some sort underneath it? At least they're doing it where most people don't have to see it.

And that's about the size of it. Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |
