I hate to say this but poutine is the most overrated dish ever. Why does adding a bit of gravy and a sprinkling of cheese cost the same as a full portion of meat? I usually expect, if I were to pay ~5 dollars for some kind of food, that it's a reasonable source of calories and protien - and the poutine dissapoints in every respect. That never made sense to me.

Dude...you are completely out of your element.
Poutine is a Godsend of culinary goodness. The reason it costs as much as a full portion of meat is that it's because poutine is Quebcois haute cuisine. And that makes it expensive.

But in the future for any travellers to van I would suggest staying in the Cambie hostel in Gastown. It looks like shit but its on top of probably the most active bar in vancouver and also the cheapest.
