To Vancouver I go!
< on 5/17/2008 7:22 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

Thats right! I am heading to Vancouver on June 30th for 3 days for a small vacation. I will be arriving by train of course

First things first, can someone recommend me a decent hotel for around $50 to $60 CAD?

The Canadian? nice.

if you get the chance, the Cascades is a nice route, too.

do you know how to waltz?

You'll arrive at the CN station on Main street. You can drag your ass across the grass to the Ivanhoe hotel, which apparently has a hostel. Don't know the rates, can't speak for the quality, but it's the first suggestion you've had, and it's the only hostel within super close walking distance to the train station. Other options are along Granville street in the heart of downtown.

yeah, the skytrain station is spitting distance from the station in Van. it runs late, and is, from my experience, mostly on time. and driverless! oooh, ahhh...

Hostelling Inernational maintains 2 hostels in Van, google 'em for more info. their rates are a bit higher than, say, the samesun (which is right across the street from one), but i've heard HI hostels are not too shabby.

i can't speak for them myself, since the last time i was in vancouver, i was bunking with the great reduxzero.

oh, and as of a month and a half ago, amtrak was running Superliners on the SEA-VAC part of the Cascades, so no pretty Talgos for you unless you're coming from Portland.

do you know how to waltz?

Well shoot....we should get together for a beer..or two, we caN drink them down by the tracks!! The Ivanhoe used to be quite a dump, but might not be to bad now, might be worth checking out...I would recommend you hop onto the Skytrain and ride out to New Westminster and stay at the Met (the oldest still standing hotel in the provinces first city!). However the rates are around 80$ this time of year. You may have a hard time finding a good rate here...as Vancouver is quite expensive..especially coming into summer. In that case..its a short but steep walk up the hill to the Royal Towers..not as nice but not too bad either....around 60per night in a single room. I would NOT recommend to many hostels in Vancouver other than Same Sun on Granville...or the H.I. across the street, and there is another H.I. just off of Davie. Most others are dumps. DO NOT STAY AT THE AMERICAN BACKPACKERS ON PENDER ST!!!!@! that is all...and hope to see you here..just watch out foar radio pirates, and train riders!!!

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Well, the reason why a Superliner is being used on the SEA-VAC run is that thats the first route to go to equipment substitution if they need an replace a Talgo set on domestic service.

I don't do hostels not so much as I prefer the amenities of a hotel.

The Met Hotel seems like my best bet here though I did find one hotel $5 cheaper, a Super 8 in Langley, but thats a back track to get there.

I can do $80 an night, thats no problem.

Heh, the Royal Towers has no availability. Darn!

Was going to recommend the Bosman at 1060 Howe, handy downtown location; but the summer rates are probably too high. Still if you have AAA you might get a discount. I thought they said 89.00 yesterday. A quick search now shows 132.00 is average. So their lowest cost rooms should be cheaper. Used to be around 70 off season. As well the time saved travelling, or on transit might make the Bosman worth while. You can walk to most everything, except Woodlands

The back units are quieter. It's not fancy, usually clean. Check the sheets with the lights on before diving in. Seriously, I had a sc'hairy incident one time. They changed the sheets though.

At the train station there should be cards for Sandman and a couple of other hotels with large printed fairly cheap room rates on them. They have them on the ferries.

Any recommendations in Portland for about the same price? I used to do okay with Econo Lodges in Washington. Have a great trip.

If your talking Portland proper, you got many options. I suggest any Shilo Inn down here as I think you get the best bang for your buck.

He's also a boot legger, old school.

SKELLY...if you come within ten miles of me, I'm going to give you that education we've been talking about, re: decent drink. I'll find you, sir, and I'll make short work of your love affair with that wretched piss water you call Canadian.

You've been warned.

we get Canadian here, but I think it has something to do with the fact that Coors is located here in Colorado, and Molson and Coors are the same company. Canadian is my go-to beer if I can't afford Stella.

I got a four of La Fin Du Monde the other day. Fucking brilliant beer. I'm trying to convince the liquor store by my house to do a special order of Alexander Keith's, too.

I got it while I was in Ontario from the Beer Store.

But you can only get bottles down here, not the 950 mL can I have in that photo.

And Kubla, your more than welcome to swim over to meet me

That'll be nice...just a short walk to trail 6, to wreck beach to chase some chub...and a hell of a long buss ride everywhere else. At least we can talk local on one repeater.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!
