| | Union Stock Yards (Power house): An in-depth exploration. < on 5/9/2008 7:42 PM >
| | | Rather than clog up the Winnipeg thread with yet another set of photos, I decided I'd give this one it's own thread. What we've got here is the Union Stock Yards power house. There's an old generator in here, and it looks like part of it used to be used for pumping water. There also used to be compressed air tanks, but they have been removed since last year. Very industrial, very old. I bet you some of this machinery is antique, original to the building which, as far as I can guess, was probably built along with the main building in 1913. I fell in love with this generator! Take a look, it looks like a one cylinder deal. Looking through the bottom you can see the giant connecting rod and crankshaft. Up top, through those holes in the side, you can see the piston. It almost looks like a 2 stroke motor I had in an old dirt bike. Anyone know anything about these?
These are the bearings on the bottom end, that allow the crankshaft to rotate.
Part of the connecting rod for the piston. Crankshaft is below, piston up top.
Here we have the side of the engine's piston.
Same set of holes above where the last image was taken. Piston is below here.
Cylinder head?
Flywheel, and pulley.
Motor/generator 1.
Generator 2. I'm almost positive this one is a generator. The first one actually looks like more of a motor.
This looks like the oil pan. To the left looks like the oil sump, that would suck the oil up and inject it at various parts of the engine for lubrication. Much like the oil pan and sump system in your car's engine.
And finally, this is where the connecting rod and the crankshaft meet. Ignition forces the rod downwards, which turns the crank. Inertia, thanks to the large flywheel, causes the crank to rotate back upwards, compressing the fuel/air mixture, which is then ignited, and the cycle continues.
Enough of that engine! Time for more exploring!
Heading downstairs...
We see... some sort of equipment? Rusty motor to the left leads me to believe it's some sort of compressor, or a pump.
Boiler??
This room was amazing. Looks to be the maintenance room. Tons of spare belts, tools, bolts, electronics, lights, parts.
I looked up the name on one of these. Turns out to be some sort of office intercom system! Really old though, they used vacuum tubes!
Belts...
SPARK PLUGS! *Gasp* Something i recognize! No doubt they served a purpose in the generator's engine upstairs.
Another shot of the office intercom radios. I found this page through google. Cool! That's the exact same one! http://babychamp.ca/modelR4B.htm
Another intercom?
Off in another room...
...SCENE MISSING... Crappy tile job.
Boarded up now, this is the main entrance for when the building was in use. It is not a current entry point.
Heading upstairs...
Strange, burned out bathrooms on the entirely burnt down top floor.
Thanks for looking, everyone! [last edit 6/5/2008 9:49 PM by Darkwolf - edited 5 times]

| | | Thanks, guys! Sad news though. Since my last visit, the place has been trashed by looters, and metal thieves are stealing the larger of the two generator/motors. You can see a picture of the generator via the link below. It's now unbolted from its mount, and on its side. On the bright side, I can almost assure you it's much too large to steal using a pickup truck, so these damn thieves won't be getting anything for their efforts. http://www.uer.ca/...page=47&pp#post920

| | | Drove by there yesterday and saw some suspicious characters. We were planning on checking up on the site to see how trashed it is. I didn't wanna chance it, in case those people we saw were scrappers.
