I'm down.. Just depends on the time but generally fridays and saturday evenings are workable. Can't stay too long but would be good to share location info ideas..

Hey, Fridays and Saturdays are my days off too (though Saturdays are generally dedicated to caving) so either of those nights would be great.

I would like to go caving. There are more caves than abandoned things in CO... seemingly.

Sweet! Since there's interest... now we just have to pick a day/place/time.

Me too! I was recently at Cave of the Winds on the lantern tour, and thinking about how great it would be to do that sans cheesy tourist pics and t-shirts.

Guess what...I may work there.

That trail behind the cave of the winds where the old entrance was is pretty badass. Apparently there are caves too, I just have never had the right gear to check them out.

Oh my god... that's too funny!!! Small world!

Verbatim, that is exactly what my guide said. Is that something all the guides have to say, or is that something you made up and stick to? I wonder if you were my guide!

And yes, my picture was totally cheesy. It's karma biting me in the ass after spending years laughing at tourists in south Florida (my parents ran a motel there when I was growing up.) I can't take a good picture on a trip - cruise ship, Disney World, Cave of the Winds, Hershey Park. I always have the dopiest 3rd grader smile/poses. Agghhh...I hope no one ever sees that picture...

We all laugh about tourists...then we go on trips and become them...nasty cycle.

Also I could have been your guide, I can think of one or two others who use pretty much that speech though. --Honestly I don't care if you buy the photo, just shut up and get it taken to make the owners happy-- is basically what it translates to.

"Good" is a very ambiguous term. Colorado is home to some of the largest collections of white beaded anthodites in the world. If you mean long...we top out at just over 12 miles in the longest surveyed system. Wind and Jewel in South Dakota are upwards of 100, and Kentucky's Mammoth Caverns is around 400 miles. So, yeah we have nice caves, none of the sprawling karst that blankets the south, but where it is, it's nice.

Very true.
My opinion of the word 'good' when applied to caves is a wet system filled with flowstone of all types;

And although few have such majesty as Lechuguilla, some show caves come close, as Marengo cave in Indiana does.
Overall length isn't something that really matters to me. I like features! Just as what I look for in mines and drains; TIL isn't long, but is filled with interesting features and lots of water. The underground Belden mill isn't very long either, but you could get lost in its chambers!
I can still appreciate any hole in the ground, but visiting the flowstone forests as a child has made those caverns unbeatable in my mind.
Speaking of formations, you remind me of why I still want to visit the innards of the Sherman Tunnel. They say it has areas still filled with rhodochrosite!

Anyway folks, I say we go to a cave... er, well, if I can go when you all do that is. I'm only free on Sundays and Mondays right now.

Jeez man, have you been to lech!?

In the way of formation covered caves, most of the ones in Colorado are under tight control from the Colorado Cave Survey, meaning generally bombproof gates, and combinations changed every couple weeks. The problem is that caves left to the public get trashed pretty quickly, by graffiti, formation plunderers and generally careless or malicious people, even high amounts of traffic are enough to coat the whitest of formations with the reddish dust common to our caves.

The picture is one of the anthodites in a room known as Silent Splendor, located in cave of the winds (albeit far from the tour route), it's known as the bottle brush.

The last time I was in CO we stopped at the Fairy caves up in Glenwood Springs, which were OK overall. They did have one absolutely spectacular room with a bunch of formations going back as far as you could see that is absolutely gorgeous. I don't know if I'd recommend driving out there JUST for the caves, but if you're in the area it's definitely worth checking out.

I actually haven't seen much of the fairy caverns, the only time I was up there was for a rescue training, the mock rescue of which took nearly six hours to get the worse of two patients through about 10 minutes worth of cave (don't get hurt in caves kiddies).

If you are in the Glenwood Canyon, check out the little sulphur spring caves. They're in the south wall of the canyon (Amtrak side of the river), on the east end of town.

This is true. I grew up in Missouri. I'd be happy to go caving there.

And also to whomever, you don't need much gear to start out with. A helmet and clothes you don't mind getting filthy, if you UE you have everything else you need.

Oh, no! In my dreams guy, I'm no scientist, and I doubt an offering of old diesel engine components would appease the council!

You know, I've driven by countless times but have never had the time to actually stop. Always been interested though... is it worth a group trip? Or would you guys rather go to Cave of the Winds?

Yep. And anybody who does drains or mines has the stuff too.

I'd agree. Worth the trip to Glenwood? Not really. But worth it if you're in the area. I find the local mines much more interesting. Cave of the Winds is much more worth it in my opinion, and its much closer for most of us.
