Sterick building in Memphis

I am fascinated by the Sterick Building. My father (who is now deceased) used to have his office there.

It's amazing to me that such a large and beautiful building is now abandoned.

It looks like there may be a page for this in the database, but I need to become a full member to access this.

In the meantime I would appreciate any information or pictures that anyone is willing to share.

This is a great website!

Regards,

Ed

This is the only shot I have from Sterick handy. I'm hoping to go back soon, though. I was sick the last time I went and didn't feel up for thirty flights of stairs to get to the roof.

Sara -- Thanks for the picture and for the information that you generously shared in the chat room.

My sense is that the Sterick building is the ULTIMATE urban exploring experience. In any city other than Memphis, the Sterick building would have been refurbished by now and would have never been abandoned.

This is a miniature Empire State Building with a neo-gothic kiss of extra elegance and beauty. And it was the tallest and nicest building in Tennessee for many years -- the place to be for the most successful businesses in town. In contrast, the UP Bank building (albeit taller) is a soulless, boring box, and the only interesting part is the abandoned restaurant at the top.

Visitors to the Sterick have been blessed and I hope one day to join your ranks.
