Phone line tunnels

Does anyone have any info on phone or cable line tunnels? I would assume the approach would be the same for draining, maybe a bit harder as you would have to pop manhole covers... Are the laws any stricter for these tunnels than for drains?

I really have no info at all for exploring these tunnels, aside from the fact that I know they exist in my town because we hardly have any power lines or anything, just about everything is underground.

I was thinking since these would connect to buildings there may be a way to gain entrance into a building through tunnels. Any ideas on this would be nice too.

If you were to get caught exploring these tunnels, I wouldn't be surprised if they threw the patriot act at you. You can never tell these days. I would assume that these tunnels would look just like a steam tunnel. If these tunnels did connect to buildings, it would be through like 1' pipes, clearly not enough room to climb up. However, I would bet that these tunnels you speak of have openings that lead to various parts of the city or town, wherever the tunnel is. If you are looking for a tunnel that connects buildings, check and see if there is a historical district near you... a lot of houses built a long time ago (pre 1900) have tunnels that connect places. I know for sure that over here in the NE there are quite a few houses that have tunnels under them. I know that Capone (as in Al) used tunnels in Chicago for trafficking alchohal during prohibition, but I doubt many of those exist anymore, and of course that is in Chicago... If you have connections at the local cable / phone company, ask about the tunnels.

i dont know about in the states but here in canada the telephone stuff is highly secure, the CO buildings built at the height of the cold war are reinforced concrete as they knew they would be targets

CO's in Canada (most of Ontario anyway) are very insecure. There's a *VERY* predictable 4 digit code used to open a majority of them.

In my experience many places don't have tunnels for the phone system. It's usually a set of two manholes that lead into a small underground room. In the room there are a bunch of small diameter holes that carry cables. In the room those cables usually go to interface/splice boxes where the linemen can work on them. Tunnels do exist in certain places, but from what I've seen most places just have those small conduit rooms.

Don't bet on it. Generally there's just non-traversable pipe/conduit with occasional telco vaults beneath large manhole lids. Likewise with power conduits and vaults, (though they often have the green boxes atop them), and cable TV. Not much, if anything, that can be travelled by humans. There are exceptions, but... they're exceptions, not the rule.

The only likely building connection of any significant size would be to your local telco office. A door into a building would server little purpose to a 1/4" cable...

Well if you realy want to explore Telco tunnels, I sugest you talk to some phone phreaks. If you can get them to talk they have a great depth of information about theae tunnels . Over at textfiles.com there are a number of old textfiles from the 80's that describe what are under a telco manhole. As pointed out in the US if you are caught inside one of these places it is not a misdemeanor trespass charge because the moment you open any communications infrastructure related object it becomes not only a felony but a federal charge. And in this insane world right now you may never see the light of day.

If you go remember to bring your beige box. (semi-obscure phreaking reference) It would kind of be fun to see just how many wires are connected by how many dialtones there are.

Another thing might be to find out when the next 2600 meeting is your area. Might be useful to finding out if anything accessible or not. Depending on the group there may be a few folks who know that kind of thing.

That would definitely not be a misdemeanor if you got caught with equipment like that down there...

I would like to point out that most phone manhole covers are bigger then sewer ones (at least thats how they make 'em in St. Paul) and when they open them, they use two people and a pickaxe or two. They are very heavy, and would be difficult to get off, and back over your head, and back off again from below (VERY HARD), unless you know of one which isnt in a street, which I have yet to see.

Unless you have a pretty good lead about there being tunnels, I wouldnt waste my time breaking my back for the risk of jail time, and at best maybe a large room.

In my town they are starting to bury them underground, I'll have to watch the construction...

There is a massive PG&E transformer building surrounded by lots of huge manholes, (the place is abandoned)... you think they would serve as access to the building? Because of the potential asbestos and the manholes being in a road, I don't think I would attempt access.

Does anyone know what the laws for a minor exploring the phone tunnels would be?

Depends on how much of a minor. I'm sure if you're over 12 or 14, they'd be able to smack you with a nice thick felony charge or two.

as for the CO's in canada ive been in the main one for toronto, 75 adelaide, is acctually pretty secure at the entrance but once you get in its basically a 4 code pass lock to get into the rooms... pretty cool in there though, they've got rooms full of DSC-400's and in the newer upgraded rooms it looks like something out of the matrix, pure white rooms and 4 or 5 white server racks

Screw Infiltration. Call the phone company and request a tour.
-OR-
When you see workers entering the tunnels, buy donuts and offer a bribe.
-OR-
Leave a trail of crumbs leading away from the manhole to distract the workers while you explore the grates they've left open.

-WELL-

Those are some ideas I thought of to help you in your quest.

Good luck!

pretty sure around here its just underground vaults with 2 manhole entrances. But judging by the number of 'MTS' manholes, for some reason theres about a half dozen within 2 or 3 blocks of here..

The reason why I'm pretty sure its 2 manholes to one vault is that for the last 3 weeks, MTS vans have been parked at 2 manholes beside my school, and I've seen a worker go into one manhole tent and come out the other later.

I wonder whats behind THAT door?

The double manhole vaults are usually to provide safer ventilation. Workers open both covers, then pump fresh air into one hole and let the potentially bad air come out the other. They also make pulling cables easier, as you get to choose which manhole provides the most desireable bending path for the cable to follow.

You would think the 2 manholes would also be to provide more then one way out in the event of.... anything. Seeing as you ARE trapped underground... *I* would feel better with 2 manholes.

I wonder whats behind THAT door?
