Bamberton, BC (Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!)

Inspired by a set I found on Flickr the other day, I had to check out whatever was left of the old Cementworks site. Unfortunately I waited too long and there is not much left at all. (Had to register at the developer's office but he was fine with letting me in to take pictures.)
I'm surprised this site has not been documented for UER before.

Fantastic pictures here;
(note - the kiln has since been dismantled.)

Funny, I was just thinking about that place. Nice photos of the 'more hidden area'. Way to go getting in. I tried about a year ago, they said no. I said fine, be that way...

Was kicked out of there once, but got lots of photos first, they took my licence plate and name, no biggie.

That concrete road down is awesome on a bike. Major loss of elevation, tight Alpine style switchbacks, basically half the height of the Malahat to sea level in 3 minutes. Dewit!

God knows what kind of impact that place is going to have on the 'hat or the wee Brentwood Bay ferry. It's a controversial project, time will tell if they were honest, all that green talk, yadda yadda.

Mod: Nice link, he has some great shotz.

A. Lien; I'm surprised they didn't let you in? Now I'm wondering why they did let me in. I assumed it was because it was a Saturday and not much work was being done. Or maybe they thought a conservatively-dressed female was unlikely to cause trouble. ;)

kowalski; fantastic pictures, thanks for sharing. I would have loved to have seen it back then.

I walked through there years ago when camping with family. I instantly remembered the place when I saw pic 7. I also scored one of those metal bars that gets set into concrete, and then used to anchor the cables that support power poles. You probably have no idea what I'm trying to describe, but it's still in the garage used to compact the garbage.

She might have recognized me from before, she could have been the same person. Their security is, or was low key. I had a friend with me, he stayed in the car.

I believe they were at a more intense stage of destruction, and maybe even not all aspects of the plans were approved or in place. There was a massive pit, many stories if someone fell, blah blah.

In summary, I tanked with a serious lack of charm, you has the right moves

Yeah, that part was always there. They quarried aggregate there in the early years before extraction moved to other sites.

We climbed out of it, twice.

For scale, the ruins visible up the pit face on the left side are easily the equivalent of a two-storey building.

Everyone can visit Bamberton.
There's tours down the main street of the old company village and a view into the old quarry on the mountainside. You can also go down to the old plant site on the waterfront, all on Sundays during the summer. There's even a museum and a really cool documentary movie that's shown at the old manager's house. Bamberton was a place that went from Dust to Bust and its got a really fascinating history.

Do you know what that is in the middle of the photo, or what it was a part of?

It wasn't particularly clear to me what role that storage silo played.

That may be true. My understanding is that most of what's depicted in the photos I posted here and on my website was demolished in 2006/2007. And the line of buildings on the waterfront (machine shop, bunkhouse, etc.) that you're mentioning was already being used for artists'/craftsmans' studios when I visited.

In fact, the rotating images on the corporate Bamberton website give a pretty good idea of what's happened to the portions of the property pictured in my photographs. Yes, anyone can visit tourist-fake Bamberton, but the real site as it existed just a couple of years ago is gone, sorry.

It is a shame it's in such bad shape but it's not from age. When the plant shut down in 1980 the site was rented by the Armed Forces and RCMP. THey used it for explosives practice and hostage taking situations inside some of the buildings.

THe picture shows the sand storage silo. The quarried rock was dumped into the top end of the hole (behind the silo), passed through the primary crusher and then was mixed with sand (silica) before moving on to the rest of the process.

You are so right it is a shame most of the buildings are gone but we're doing our best to preserve some of the history.
