AF Gallun Tannery

The Gallun Tannery's days are numbered. It's days were numbered in 2005, when most of the buildings on the complex were demolished and several buildings were gutted to make way for a condominium project, but those plans fell through. However, what is left of Gallun will also soon be lost. Tanesay developers of Appleton has bought the complex and is planning a new development called 'Gallun Gardens.' Tanesay is weighing the options of either demolishing the buildings left on site or converting them, though Tanesay prides itself on preservation. Either way, Gallun's days as a dusty, albeit empty tannery will likely soon come to an end as the (de)construction crews will likely soon return. So there was a sense of urgency to get in before Tanesay thought more about renovation work, including perhaps bricking up entry points.

Got a chance to go back in, this time with a flash card. I had heard rumours that the place was pretty cleaned out since the halted renovation work and the fire, but I thought it'd be interesting nonetheless. And it kind of was, I guess...but not as exciting as I had hoped. There was some entertaining graffiti, rotting floors and open walls to nowhere that kept things interesting. The most interesting relic left in the building was the elevator motor on the roof, but I didn't even take a picture of that...
I only visited two of the three buildings on the site. By the time I got out of those two buildings my hands couldn't take anymore of the blistering cold (that's why the last photos are so damn blurry-can't hold a camera straight) and I didn't really feel like stealthing by the sidewalk to visit a building that was probably as empty as the other two. Next time, though, definitely...

And I kind of regret not taking my tripod in, because it was cold as fuck...but I needed to get comfy with the new external flash so...

Photos of an extraordinarily meh trip:

I don't like heights, so I didn't take these stairs because I didn't have to. On the main stairway I came up, though, one of the doors to the elevator shaft was open and even though it was about eight feet from where I had to walk I was against the wall to keep away from it.

Squatter camp but no squatters...

This building on the other side of Water Street from the rest of the complex has already been converted to apartments.

Obligatory bird corspe shot [though I wish I got a photo of the bats that scared the fuck out of me]

What's left of the building is pretty blah, I wish I could've seen it sooner than I did. However, the view from on top of the building at night brings me great joy. It's not overly high, but it is a nice place to hang out with friends and talk. though, if you are afraid of heights, that may not be as appealing, haha.

Nice shots!

Too bad there isn't more left on the inside. Its still an interesting place, but tanneries that still have the machinery are very cool. ( Unfortunately the smell damn near unbearable )

Very nice shots.

Thanks! I'll be going back sometime in the spring to do just that. I don't mind the heights as much as being close to the edge. The only reason I didn't check out the roof during this instance was because I don't trust rotting, one hundred year roofs under a foot and a half of snow.

That pbr place is amazing even in its current condition. I can't imagine what it must have been like 3 years ago.

I've been lucky enough to see a few amazing breweries in various stages of fucked uppedness. One may have even had people working still at the time. Chances to see large old breweries like this will not likely come often again. Which is very sad. I did miss out on Blatz and Schlitz. That sucked much balls.

That's not true. All you have to do is live 100 more years and visit the large manufacturing complexes in Mexico and China. That is where they all go when ours close. In another hundred years some third world country like the United States may under cut them and take all their jobs.
