Isonitriles stench spray or OC pepper spray?

It's supposedly the WORST SMELL known to man, the Godzilla of stench and supposedly patented for non-lethal weapons use.
http://www.world-s...s/060925_odors.htm

It's like a skunk smell in a can, but there are apparently some people who don't mind the skunk smell so much.

So, what's more effective should you be confronted by hooligans and/or transients/vagrants/squatters, OC pepper spray or isonitriles? Pepper spray is a recognized "weapon" reckless use can get you into trouble, but isonitriles spray would be like farting in someone's face, no?

I dont have enough room in my bags to carry pepper spray or mace, with the three camera bodies, 5 primes, 4 zooms, mono-pods, tripods, meters, film cards, strobe packs, drinks, food, flashlights, etc.....So if I run into hooligans, I just turn around and squeeze off a lethal air biscut...works just as good, their eyes water and the vomit, all the while giving me time to run away, being that I am already facing in the opposite direction

Steal only whatever you can run with comfortably and leave no footprints

Jesus that's a lot of $$$ to be taking with you into a sketchy place. Max I'll go in with is a body, crappy lens (zoom if I must), a tripod, and flash if it's really needed. Might as well just swing your camera by the strap on one finger while running into the street...

I would go with the OC since from the experience that chemist had, you'd be at risk of being "stenched" also. YEAH running while uncontrollably vomiting

What I do is just bring an actual skunk attached to a leash (that way I don't have to carry him... smart eh?) When bad guys show up, the skunk is a visual deterrent, and if things escalate, I just pick up my furry rodent, aim, and squeeze. If multiple dirtbags surround me, I just start swinging him around like a shotput while the sweet aroma protects me. Works every time.

In Massachusetts, citizens can get a "permit" to carry self defense spray (pepper spray or mace) from the local police department. It's sort of treated like a firearms permit, and is usually administered by the same department/staff which deals with firearms. I believe there's a nominal fee ($5.00-$15.00) for it, but I know some cities and towns don't charge it.

One thing I've noticed is that if one does not have a permit, and a bad guy gets sprayed under a legit self defense situation, nothing happens to the person who was attacked. It's because I believe police prosecutors and the district attorneys office will not file charges for using the spray without a permit. I'm sure it's for multiple reasons: 1. Bad guy deserved it, 2. Potential victim was "saved" by the use of the spray (Police would rather see citizens use spray vs firearms?), 3. Public relations hit in the newspapers if the police/prosecutors go after someone (young or old woman, mom, mother-to-be, etc) who used it successfully, 4. Bad guy deserved it.

Oh, forgot to mention, the skunk sleeps under my bed for night protection. It has it's own blanket and pillow, and is also toilet trained.

You seemed to answer your own question accurately in my view. What's more effective? Depends on who you are facing. Transients, vagrants, and squatters could get the dose of isonitriles/skunk spray (as long as you are not in fear of your life). If you are in fear of your life, say from hooligans, muggers, gang bangers, or whoever, they should get the OC or mace since it's designed as a self defence tool. If someone was bothering, hassling, or bugging me though, I would not spray them with the Can of Skunk, but would just walk away and come back another time. Spraying them may escalate the situation were you can be harmed by them (remember, it's just a bad smell. Does not take their breath away or water/shut the eyes). Spraying them with Can of Skunk may also bring charges against you for assault, since it was an actual item/product you brought and used against the person or persons bothering you. So in that sense, it's not really like farting in someone's face.

I do like the idea though of Can of Skunk. It could be used to take care of mean and vicious dogs, without inflicting physical harm on them. I always like dogs, but not when they are chewing on my ankle bone, windpipe, or groin area.

It costs $25.00. In every other state, there is no fee.

You should pay the $25.00 for the permit. I would not be surprised if someone was charged for using a less-lethal method in a defensive situation. Most gun stores will ask for the permit before you are sold the OC spray.

I believe you're right ICZEOZN regarding the $25.00 fee. Did not know it was a set price across Massachusetts.

Gun stores are much more vigilant when it comes to asking for appropriate permits when purchasing sprays/firearms/ammo. They have alot more to lose if they don't follow strict guidelines. I know of people from MA who have gone to either New Hampshire, Maine, etc to buy the stuff. They are the ones who end up with it without a permit, and when something happens, the police in my area don't do anything to them if it was used to defend themselves.

I agree with you in that I would not be surprised if arrests were done by police in Massachusetts for using a less-than-lethal method in a self defense situation. Great state I live in!

Are they really so strict there? I bought a can of pepper spray at a sports/outdoor store in texas. They didn't even ask for ID and I'm only 15.

Massachusetts is fairly strict (regarding legislation) with self defense sprays, slingshot, and firearm stuff. I've purchased sprays from some martial arts stores in Mass, and they didn't even blink an eye or question if I had a permit. Yet, other places (Walmart, firearms dealers, police supply stores, etc) in my state will need a kidney and your first born before coughing something over. It all depends on where you go and the people working the counter. I find New Hampshire ("The Live Free or Die" state) more obliging for purchasing stuff like this.

You might want to brush-up on your pugilist skills rather than relying on chemical weapons.

Years ago I happened on some schmuck that wanted me to leave "his location" and decided to try his pepper spray on me. It was painful and discouraging to me, but not so much so that it stopped me from beating him senseless with my 6D Maglight.

Geez, I can't even buy compressed air for paintball guns in NJ without 18 or older ID. Even need an ID to buy a friggin knife!

Try a flea market. I have had luck there. I bought a 6 inch long knife when I was 15. Never even asked for ID.

While in England, you have to be 18 to buy a pair of scissors

Probably the pepper spray if you realllly feel the need for it. You have to remember that while that isonitriles stuff is gonna reak and be somewhat effective, its probably gonna get on you as well as who ever your spraying. Do you really wanna smell like death for a week till that stuff washes out? I would personally hope not. : P

Then again, pepper spray in an enclosed space, you gonna get hit by its effects too, which makes it hard for you to react to the now rather pissed off hobo.

Best policy? Do your best to avoid the problem. If not, don't get confrontational and explore in a group.

carry a pack of cigarettes. offer them one if they ask whats up. if possible try and avoid them/know that they are there before they know you're there. keep your eyes open and always explore with a buddy or two who know how to take care of themselves and you trust to help take care of you. keep an eye on your surroundings for possible weapons (pipes, beams, boards rocks/bricks etc). if you're really going for a deterrent, i'd go with pepper spray and a good sprint.
