Good evening, comrade - and welcome to Vancouver. Do not worry, even here you will be among, ahem, like minded people.

TL has done nothing but boast good things about the Vancouver folk. I will be at school 24/7 but if I can find an extra hour in a day at some point I think I'd like to meet with the people I've heard so much about.

Hah, is the Edmonton thread becoming the Vancouver thread?

To redirect things, I thought I'd... oh wait, this may not be the right place to talk about this... oh well. Anyways, walking around downtown today I noticed a building, which I think is abandoned, or just not in use right now, which is on a busy street (109th, right before the bridge). It had a broken window on the side of the building facing the street, which would be hard to get into because the window isn't fully broken, some sharp edges, but yeah. Not sure what it is or was. Just throwing that out there.

If it is the old Federal Building, that place was in the paper 2 weeks ago. the government is sinking 360+ million into the building to renovate it and build it back up to useable status!

Good to hear they are going to clean the place up... Wish I knew about the news conference in the lobby, I would have gone for sure.

No, I know which building you're talking about. Not the Federal building, it's way before that. I don't think there's much to see and I'm sure someone will replace that window, it's in plain sight.

The politicians are fools. Why the hell would the waste that much money on a building? Are they planning to have the hundreds of homeless people of this city inhabit it? I'm sick and tired of the idiots running this city making bogus decisions. Are there votes on these types of things? Where can I go to express my opinion? 360 million dollars on the Federal building; what the hell is wrong with it that it needs so much fixing up? And just who are they going to put in there?

First the giant million-plus dollar dome that will be covering Churchill Square, and now this. And yet, places like the Arlington are sitting in ruins. Yeah, I know that's public versus private property, but in the grande scheme of things I'm getting the idea that parliament is wasting our effin' tax dollars (surprise surprise). Maybe I'm just so enthralled because I just watched Point Break again and I've got that rage against society thing going on, but still. This is super lame.

hehe

its totally true. i think a lot of the money comes from stuff like asbestos removal and total hvac and electrical and plumbing changes. they are stripping the full building out plus adding an underground parkade. lots of money going in to the work thats for sure. too much, i agree. you should be able to rip it down and build another building. but even if you rip it down, you still have to do the full asbestos removal first. so your going to spend a lot of money on it to tear down too.

We missed you on friday btw C&D, but understand you had to work!

I learned about asbestos removal from watching Session 9. No big deal, it's a cash cow, they are charging too much.

Having studied the government for 5 years in University I didn't bat an eye at the amount for this project. But I think C&D was a little shocked at the cost for this. I just like to point out that only $200m is for the building its self. The other $156m is for a parking garage, with 650 spaces. Do the math thats $240,000 per parking space. Kind of pricey, maybe its because of Alberta's labour shortage.

But to play devils advocate here, the $200m for the building isn't that bad. Take off the %5 the feds will get back in GST its only $190m. Since they switched to accrual accounting the cost will be amortized of the life span of the building (probably 35-40 years). So $4.75m a year, or about five and a half grand for each employee which isn't too bad, and much cheaper than Public Works average cost per employee. Factor in that all new buildings must be 'green' and $1,000 ergonomic chairs, payment in lieu of property tax... it all adds up.

So if they were going to waste money on something, I'd rather it be wasted on this pretty building than on some other half baked idea. I'm not to sure about the $156m parking garage. But they might be able to justify that by charging for the spots.

Anyways, I could go on about this stuff forever.

Pssh! Turn the building into a museum hahaha. Charge admission and have it bring in a profit.

Yeah, no doubt there are costs but it just blows my mind that THAT much money can go into a building when people need the money spent elsewhere. Society is crumbling and people are dying because of the holes in the systems we have. I just see a building and a price tag, and yes, it is a beautiful building, but politics just doesn't make sense to me so I will "trust" the experts on this one.

I resent that TL. But yes, I am not fond of heights and I need persuasion to set foot on any ladder. I would place my skill set far below that of TL, I see him as an expert. Actually, he's the best explorer I've ever met.

And for your information HypnoToad, I'm heading out west in search of school! Fun comes second.
