Well, the best way to not be heard is to take your shoes off (depending on floor conditions). I just don't walk flat on my foot, I roll my foot.

Exactly, I do that and I'm pretty quite even in my combat boots.

My old man and I were thinking about the new sewage treatment plant by the dockyard, does anyone think I could get clearance to look around (of course with someone "holding my hand" the whole way)? It might be possible since they haven't got it running yet, but afterwards it will most likely be out of the question entirely. Frankly I don't think it's possible even now

Just make sure you have a professional "looking" camera (not a cheap digital) and say that you're doing an article for your school paper. Even if you're not in school.

Now there's the sticking point; my only really professional camera is an 35mm Soviet Zenit from the '70s. I've been looking at a Canon Rebel XTi but I won't get it in time to do this.

Anyone know of other places that could do for a decent exploration?

I'm going to go the 'historical research' route if I'm ever approached. Camera + notes = must be researching/harmless. lol

Wear neatly pressed work pants and shirt, a pair of boots, and hard hat with no stickers or other shite on it (you need to look important and official). Put the notes on a clipboard too.

Well, if it helps us any, I just sent an email to the Gypsum Wharf owner (using my father's email account) to see if I can get some close-up shots of the boat. This was more of a curiosity attempt to see if they'll agree.

It was the first time I saw that video, and I didn't find it very funny...nor informing.

Agreed.

Does anyone know about that old power plant near the historic properties? It's right on the waterfront, follow the boardwalk towards the mouth of the harbor, I think it may be on Terminal Road.

My father seems to think they used it for a film studio a little while ago, there might be a way to get in (or at least to some of the platforms part way up the building).

It's a film studio.. still active.

EDIT: my mistake NS Power didn't let them stay, they were out by the end of Nov... rediculous.. I don't think it's a good idea to hit it yet though..
Moirs will also be available soon, once they sell off some of the equipment..

The studio, by the way, was called Electropolis.

They used to screen films outdoors there during the summer. It's a shame it's no longer operating. Would be awesome to have a look around inside, buildings like those fascinate me.

Heya folks,

Been reading your thread, and I was wondering if any of you knew the story on this boat you're looking at. Chances are that if its been abandoned for awhile that anything valuable has probably been taken off by the company that owns it, and they're no longer paying somebody to stay on board and watch it.

I'll agree that most boat owners do lock there boats, but on something this large and commercial, the owner has very little to do with the actual boat. There's probably a 50% chance that the Captain even bothered to make sure it was locked before he left. Even if he did, ships are fitted with emergency escape hatches in various places, and it is pretty uncommon for them to have a locking mechanism, let alone be locked.

From reading the thread it sounds like a rusty old foreign owned beast that more than likely has several ways in. Your biggest problem would be getting to it, but people don't bother looking out the windows of their homes anymore...especially during hours when they should be sleeping.

It is a neglected refugee boat that has been sitting at the end of a wharf for the past ten years or so; therefore I dought they really care about it that much. At least not enough to put a watchman and security systems on board.

And thanks to sonikgirl and hfx_chris for the info on the studio.

The boat is beginning to sounds more and more like its a "walk up to it and walk on" kind of deal. Great!

I got an email back from the Gypsum Wharf in HRM, it doesn't belong to them, it belongs to Ultramar Canada. So I'm gonna keep poking, see what I can come up with. So the wharf is privately owned.

Especially as a refugee boat, I doubt there will be any trouble getting on board and having free reign over everything. Especially if its owned by Ultramar, where they would have to pay about $20 an hour for security on board, I don't think you guys will run into anybody.
