It looks like that little platform may be some sort of pontoon or houseboat.
Here's a link to a photo I found on the Dartmouth Yacht Club site, it shows the ship in the background:

http://www.dyc.ns....c_5814_55_817.html

I could go do some surveillance work on my lunch breaks, 'cause I only work in Burnside, so it wouldn't be too much of a problem for me, the only problem is where would I park?

Look for places where you normally see people parking along the side of the highway (people are sometimes parked in roads that lead off into the bush). Do you have a pair of small binos? A pair of small Bushnells cost about $20 at Wal-Mart and work pretty well.

Whatever the case may be about that little platform, it should be avoided untill we know for certain what it's about.

Good luck with the recon Nootz.

I just checked the satellite images again; I can see the marina, but the closest houses do not seem to be in view of the boat (at least not close enough to see it properly). Can the boat be seen easily from the marina (especially at night)?

A few questions for you True Karma, when you leave the marina which way do you (and most other people take)between the two islands or the boat and the two islands? It could make a big difference.

Roughly how far is it from the shore to the island closest to the boat? What sort of cover is there on the island? What sort of cover is there closer to the island's shore?

And what is that little platform next to the island, is it always there?

I am not sure if the dock has lights on it or not but my guess is that it doesn't. I see no lights on the dock from the satellite. I am sure no one would look from DYC(yacht club)at night and they wouldn't be able to see the road from the houses at night if there are no lights.

In the summer everyone takes the long way out to the basin which is on the side of the farthest island so you would have a easier time seeing the boat at the docks of DYC.

The island does give it a bit of cover. I would say its about 15 M to the island from the wharf/boat. I once sailed up there in a very small boat but I wouldn't think anyone else at the club would do that because there is a high chance of hitting rocks.

The "little Platform" is a house boat. I wouldn't think someone would live on it during the winter but they might.

If I were you guys I would be more focused on trying to sneak past the houses then DYC. In the winter DYC dies down a lot and not a lot of people will be watching the water. If you just look out of a back window in one of the houses you can see if anyone is coming up the road.

Hey Nootz. The road is in the big steel lot so parking is a very big issue. You might just want to drive down the road(if plowed) and pretend you are just looking out on the water.

Thats a pretty sexy sailboat too. It might be my favorite out of every boat at the club.

Anyways whoever goes in be very very careful that boat is only painted like rust. It is still very useful with a nice refit.

Thanks, do you know how far it is from the main shore to the island (maybe between the yacht club and the gypsum wharf).

Thats a pretty sexy sailboat too. It might be my favorite out of every boat at the club.

Which boat are you refering to? The one stopped halfway between the yacth club and the island?

If you mean the big orange thing I'm not sure. I think my old man knew one of the guys who boarded and searched it, from what I hear it was in very hard shape (even for a boat from the third world). Regardless, we can't assume one way or the other without having firsthand knowledge.

Oh f**k! What a BLOODY good strategist I am not seeing the BLEEDIN' houses right next the JESUS wharf!

Sorry about those previous comments (on the last page of posts) True Karma, I didn't notice the houses right next to wharf (well, I thought they were National Gypsum buildings). This will teach me to go over the maps and other recon aiding stuff with an even finer toothed comb from now on.

Main shore(DYC) to the island closest to the Tug is about 2300 Feet

Main shore(DYC) to the the other island far tip is 2450 feet

Main shore(DYC) to tug is about 2550 feet

Tip of marina(dock system at DYC)to Tug is about 2250 feet.

I pulled these from Google maps and for sailing almost every day in few summers between them these seem about right to me.

I am referring to the sailboat when I say it is sexy.

About the big orange tug... Some big company were going to refit it a few years ago but they went under and ever got around to it(or so my dad says).

Thanks for the intel, from what I can see, it'd be pretty easy to avoid being seen by the people in the houses, just don't walk along the top of the road/causeway. Walk along the slope, near the water.
As for parking, I could always park in the lot across the road where Glubes is, but I'd have to wait for a weekend to do recon that lengthy, I only get a half hour for lunch during the week.

Hmm. From what I a remember the road is flat and it drops off to rocks that would be tricky to crawl across even during the summer but as long as you go under the cover of darkness you shouldnt have a problem. Be very careful! The road will likely be unplowed, icy and if you fall off the boat or the wharf in the winter there will be a good chance that you will die.

Good luck.

Lol, thanks for the vote of confidence...
I have a good sense of my surroundings anyways. As for the road, as long as it's not a straight drop, it should be easy to navigate on the side. And for the boat, I just need to make sure there's a sure way on/off of it. I'll probably do my recon on Saturday afternoon/evening. Probably between 1600 and 1700.

I'll take pics from a distance, I don't actually plan on going in there until I know how active it is during the night.

Exactly, but taking pics of the surrounding area is good for later reference when you actually begin to plan.

Do you know of any places or anyone here who would know about places in Beaverbank and Fall River?

The only places I know in Beaverbank are the Villa and the R/C airplane runway which is about 3 or 4 kilometers down the road.
Can't think of any places in Fall River though, 'cept the locks.

Thanks, I've been kicking myself lately for not getting into the old Multi Service Center in Sackville before the demolition crews set up shop.

Now I'm trying to find other locations to make me feel better

It can be seen from the highway leading into Sackville from Bedford, right now it's wrapped in orange plastic and has a massive excavator parked next to it.

I also wanted to let you know that it's not really worth the effort; my father and I just explored it tonight. The workers tore up the floor and tore down the walls inside. The only things left inside are support beams, joists, pillars, cinderblock walls, and a gravel floor (along with a collection of machines and a large self-propelled air blower thingy). The lighting was bad so even with the flash I didn't get any really good photos.

We couldn't explore the office area that was still intact because security had set up an office there and we could see the guy from where we were. We were kind of hoping to talk to him about what's being put in there and if we could look around a little further.

Anyhow, I'm planning on looking around an old garage I scouted a few months ago and forgot about untill this evening.

Last I heard they had a guard in place.

They do, but when we went he was sitting in his office on the second floor of the part that hasn't been torn apart inside. We stayed in the part where most of the work has been taking place so he didn't see or hear us.
