This thread formerly known as "Any Good Areas Around Halifax?" --tbp 06/25/09

I love to explore, I love to take photos; unfortunately all of the places around me have, in the past year or so, been demolished or bought by people who are using them.

So what I'm getting at is not to ask specific places, but I've heard that there are areas that have a fair number of abandonments. Does anyone know of any good areas?

There are, and there are lots of places that have yet to be explored too..the issue is just getting into them.

There's a few good places up in the Beaverbank/Fall River/Waverly area too.
But like Urban said, getting there can be an issue for some people.

It's a shame Halifax doesn't have a Union Station like Toronto... ;)

Well it's a good thing I live in Beaverbank; I know some of my friends talk about places near them, so I'll have to ask.

I'm sure Dartmouth might have a few good spots, other then that I wouldn't trust the north end for exploring, it's gotten really bad lately

It's a shame that Dartmouth doesn't have more places to explore, though I'm sure there are plenty that not everybody knows about. But off the top of my head, I can only think of a few places in the Dartmouth core.

The only place in Dartmouth right now that I want to explore in more detail is the Alderney Gate parking garage, and the connection to the school board building.

But then again, I do have a strange thing for parking garages.... the one at West End Mall is especially creepy.

How about the old Scotia Square Parkade, it's big, and it can be creepy.

Yeah but it's always full of cars and at least kept up.

The one at West End is always completely empty, staircases are sealed or fenced over and the elevators are ancient.

Really? It's been a long time since I was in that parkade, so I wouldn't know. Is it accessible?

The ones that look like apartment blocks just to the right of the bridge when going towards halifax? You can see the refinery in the distance, right?
If so then I've been eyeing those up for some time now.

Another interesting place would be that big orange boat (looks like a heavy duty tug boat) the refugees came in on a few years back. It's moored so it can be seen through one of little coves on the highway just before Burnside industrial park. The only problem is that it's on military land.

Well, technically, Shannon Park is still on DND property too. But that hasn't stopped anybody yet.

Actually, I'm trying to figure out where this boat is. Is it in the Narrows area, or is it on the McNabs side of the MacDonald bridge?

I think it's in the basin. The next time you go towards Burnside glance out the window when you pass any of these little coves. I think it is direct line of sight from that big sign that says "Burnside Industrial Park" (assuming you come in from the Sackville side). It's a big orange tug boat type thing that refugees from Sri Lanka came in on a few years back.

I'm not surprised you don't know where it is, I've only just noticed it myself, but my father is in the navy and says it's been there for a few years.

Very much so. They're still open and used, but since that mall is pretty much dead rarely does anything past the top level get used. The bottom levels are fenced off from the outside. The old elevators that go down from The Bay are still in operation; they're old as the hills and slow as anything.
I remember back when it used to be a Sears in that mall, the elevators down to the bargain basement were pretty kick ass as well. Too bad that's all gone now. Well, the Sears Clearance Centre as they call it now is there, but heavily modified and no longer linked to the rest of the mall...
