| | | wtf? my kit lens is fairly sharp. looks like either focusing issues, or your copy is really that bad. what aperture did you use?

3.5, yeah i haven't noticed the softness of these shots before so it's probably something i did.

| | | Yea that could be it. I was going to say focusing issues but the edge softness is RIPPING so I figured it was just an overall crappy copy of the lens. Definitely try f8 though...that should make a dif...opening a lens like that up that far will definitely get you into trouble as far as softness. | | | Oof. Yes, have a coffee date with your glass and get to know it a little better. I know the XTis have tiny, dim viewfinders (I have an XT myself), so just try to look extra hard for alignment next time.

I don't think there's any way you could compose number one to make it NOT crooked, though. Either the horizontal will be straight and the vertical crooked or vice versa.

Actually, you are wrong.

Great. I said "I don't think". . . It wasn't presented as fact. Why don't you explain so we can all learn something instead of making a useless post like this?

It should have been aligned with the electrical lines and shelf because it makes more sense to the eye than the green paint on the wall, which is ambiguously distant from the frame and so the eye notices the vertical lines and the shelf more readily anyway. I don't want to tell anyone what to shoot, but I think if the whole shelf could fit into the picture comfortably with the electrical lines, it would make a nice picture.

Ok, so what I said at first is true because something in the picture would still be crooked, but you've made a good argument that it would be less bothersome to the eye. Fair enough. Thank you for the explanation. (Oh, and I agree with you about the shelf, but it ain't my photo either.)

How can I explain how to straighten lines? I just use my eyes, I don't have a special formula or anything... a+b "does not" = straight lines

Look, my original point was that to make the electrical lines (and shelf) straight, the paint line would have to be crooked. The original poster chose to make the paint line straight instead. I wasn't asking you for a formula. qwertyuiopas' post explains why he thinks it would be better to straighten the wires and shelf and let the paint line be crooked. That's all I wanted to know. I'm happy.
