| | | .... I hate to point out the relativley obvious but, animals are afraid of us. Despite what you may or may not think just about everything is scared of us. And badgers and wolverines would be extra scared cause they are small... If you ever go backpacking in yosemite (which I highly reccomend) you learn that you can actually scare a bear off by stomping at it and shouting. Sounds a little barbaric but when they are eating your food i mean what else are you gonna do?

| | | Like Ryzom said there just as scard of you as you are of them. I never ran into any animals while exploring, but I have been chased by a deer and a donkey before. Never underestimate a donkey, there fast and mean animals. I think that youd be more likely to run into a raccoon than a badger or wolverine.

| | | I don't think I've ever run into anything specifically while exploring, although I've encountered brown bears frequently while hiking. I like to carry a gun when I'm in an area with lots of bears, that pepper spray is nothing but seasoning and other things I've tried (Air horns, M-80s) don't always work. I'm not reccomending this or anything since I know a lot of people here are against guns or exploring armed, but I prefer a 12 gauge shotgun loaded first with a firecracker (bird bomb) shell, beanbag or rubber bullet, and then a bunch of slugs and buckshot in case the first two don't chase an angry bear away. I haven't had to shoot one yet.

| | | The most meanest animals are those, which are almost too small to see properly, before it's too late. I'm talking about insects and those I've encoutered enough. What's more fun, than to step on top of a wasp nest? Or perhaps a swarm of bees, mosquitos or something similar. Spiders and snakes are also nice to meet in some dark basement. Just thank God that here we only have one poisonous snake species and no spiders that could kill you. [last edit 1/16/2004 9:25 AM by Kimmo - edited 1 times]

| | | Dangerous well.......I have a story and it really scared me!...Driving around some old concession roads looking for abandonned houses (finding some)...Me and my friend pulled over to check out a house that we could tell was empty (no windows or doors)..So we pulled over...Outta no where this psycho freaking dog comes flying at my car at full speed! he jumps infront of my car and starts snarling and barking...I thought it was funny so i honked the horn to get him to move....Well that pissed him right off...He tried to attack my car!! so i tried to drive around him and he started to chase my car along side of it...I was doing about 40 (km/h) and he was staying with me and jumping towards the doors and such...He chased us for a good 5-10 minutes then i really got scared and floored it gravel flying everywhere (i didn't want to hurt the dog so i was being careful) needless to say if we had have gotten out of the car we woulda been dog food! Keep Searching Lunis

| | | It may sound stupid, but large birds are really mean. Geese and swans, those sorts of animals. You end up with incident reports that are too funny to tell anyone, but when you spook a mating pair on a nest and they attack you, you'll back off really quickly.

| | | I don't know what to do when scared of an animal but I know what not to do... run. A lot of animals will chase after and try to attack you if they know your running from them that would've normally not attacked you... but animals are pretty unpredictable so always keep that in mind I've stepped on a bee hive in the woods before Kimmo... your right, not alot of fun

| | | I would have to say that a black bear would be something you wouldn't want to cross. Especially if it's made a new home out of the place your exploring. Then again if you're in a city you don't have to worry about things like that...

| | | I got chased by a attack goat once but not while exploring. The worst I have come across it about 11 raccoons outside of one of the buildings at kp one night, the kept looking at me like the wanted to eat me but didn’t do anything. Another time in the tunnels there was a dead possum or something covered in the tunnel cricket things and so was the ceiling they all jumped on me when I walked by they didn’t do anything but sceave me though

| | | I was poking around inside an abandonded house a few years ago, found the attic access and grabbed the sides and hoisted myself up. I found that I was face to face with a racoon that was just as shocked as I at this unsheduled meeting. Looking back now I guess I was lucky she/he didn't make luncheon meat out of my face as we were only a foot away from each other.

| | | When I started draining, I purchased a 2 foot long crowbar. One end is curved and good for blunt force, and the other end was sharp and pointy. The idea was if I met up with a frightened, cornered animal ready to attack, a swift blow with the pointy end to the back of the skull will put them out of commission quickly. Makes you feel safer.

LOL it was at a barn I used to ride at. It was the owners pet. If you got too close he'd head butt you and chase you, I didnt think standing 5-10 ft in front of him talking was too close but apparently the goat did. He head butted me and chased me across the property

| | | I've had this happen a few times. Sometimes when I'm caving in the area, I'll hear this LOUD hissing start up out of nowhere. Sounds similar to a cat hissing, actually, but longer, deeper, and louder. Raccoons or opossums maybe? Not sure. It happens pretty regularly to me in the summer, but I've never bothered to see what it is, just kept moving. --WR
