Latest Mare Island Night Photos

These are from my Mare Island night explorations in the last month. These are all long exposures taken at night using flashlights and light from streetlights and the moon.
Camera: Canon Digital Rebel (original)
Looking for feedback...

#1: Up the stairs
ambient light from streetlights through the windows, LED flashlight used on stairs

#2: Building 755 Typewriter
196 sec exposure, Krypton flashlight for foreground, streetlights bleeding through the windows.

#3: Building 271 elevator equipment
orange LED light from left side, krypton flashlight from multiple angles. No ambient light in this shot.

#4: Building 271 crane and windows
Light from city across Mare Island Straights and full moon light through the windows, megabright spotlight for the crane. This crane is 60ft off the ground. Taken from ~80ft away from crane.

#5: Women's bathroom
Krypton flashlight from multiple angles, no ambient light.

#6: Building 866 deconstruction
Krypton flashlight used in foreground, light pollution from city on the clouds, streetlights providing lighting on the building.

Thanks to tunnelbug and Hoverfly for schooling me in night photography over the last few months! I took my first night shot in September. I wouldn't have made it this far without the tutoring and advice provided by these guys.

Wow! These shots look amazing. I am now inspired to try light painting more. #3 is one sick photo!

Ok. I know my post hasn't been up long, but thanks for some feedback.

Martino, yeah I really struggled with this shot. I must have taken 20 exposures trying to get the windows bright enough and timing the use of flashlight and then spotlight on the crane. The crane was big and far away and really hard to paint without splashing light on the surroundings while remembering how long I spent on each section, to keep the lighting even. Whew. I think my third trip to this warehouse might master the shot, but I need to wait for the full moon again to get the light through the rest of the windows, otherwise the city lights burn out the corner and the rest is dark! Ugh.

This was a diverse selection of many photos from Mare Island. I feel these are my best and most varied. I've been feeling like I'm in a rut though, like my composition and focus are starting to become repetitive. This probably stems from only doing night work in abandonments. I've also gotten a bit obsessive lately and have been taking A LOT of photos and going out to sites 2,3, and sometimes 4 nights in a week.

Most of the time I'm in a rush when I'm out exploring. It's always at night and I have to worry about what I have to do the next day. Large sites, 1st visits and experimenting with lighting takes a lot of time and it's really easy to feel hurried. It takes me some time to get in the groove as well, to get creative and not just go through the motions of taking the picture. I've really got to meditate on the subject matter before I can visualize the photo and lighting. Then some of these places are really hard to light as well and require experimenting with colors, exposure times, camera placement etc to get the most out of the photo.

Anyway, just my thought process on shooting abandonments at night. I always wish I had more time. Maybe I just need to slow down and not be in such a hurry to conquer so much so quickly...

Anyone else struggle with this?

Cheers,
-freeside

yep! often have the feeling i do not have enough time. And the times i thought - @ home looking at the shots: "i should've taken my time on this one" are countless.

At the other hand - when i do take the time, weird enough, results are not always better.

First off, I love 2 and 6! I also know that a lot of work must have gone into these and I say it was worth it.

Upon really looking at 1, there is far too much of the left wall for my liking.

2 I think is great, but it seems to be tilting too much to the left.

With 3 I like the lighting and the colours, but the subject just doesn't really do anything for me.

4 and 5 don't really do anything for me.

6 is great. The only possible thing I can say is that it could be tilted a smidgen to the right. Actually, now that I think about it, I also would like to have seen another shot of this that was panned more to the right.

Kudos. I would love to see more of your shots. I love night photography and wish I was over there so I could follow you guys around.

Edited to add critiques, because I didn't realize what forum I was in originally

Man...it's my continual undoing!

I'll plan a trip where I'm gonna drive several hundred miles and catch a bunch of places, but then I wind up feeling rushed because I've overbooked my schedule. I hate that, because I often wind up not nailing all the shots the way I've envisioned them...which in turn makes me wonder...why the hell did I bother making this crazy driving trip if I'm not gonna devote the time to getting it right?

So yeah...you're not alone!
