| | | For you folks with digital SLRs or even film ones, what lenses do you typically use during your explorations? Anything worth noting? I started thinking during my last exploration how spoiled I was with my 12x zoom. The camera's probably smaller than a typical SLR. I've played with my grandfather's lenses before, I know what it takes to reach 432mm (12x)

| | | My kit lens is a pretty unremarkable 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 or something. My favourite prime is an older 50mm SMC Pentax f1.4 and I also use a Pentax 28-80mm f3.5 sometimes.

| | | I mostly use a Meopta Flexaret IV with a 80mm lens (equivalent of a 50mm in 35mm film). Once you are accustomed to it you don't need anything else anymore. The only thing I bought extra are the macro close-up lenses so I could close in to about 33cm.

| | | I use a Tokina Zoom, Super Wide Angle AF 12-24mm The wide lets me capture the most out of my explorations. It isn't a super fast lense for straight up night shooting, but I don't mind the longer exposures.

| | | 28-135 f3.5 - 5.6 IS USM I'm not really using it right now, since my dSLR is in repair right now. The cool thing is that because I have a instore extended warranty, I might get upgraded to a Canon 30d, since they don't carry the 350d anymore. | | | Usually the Nikkor DX 12-24mm wideangle. Id not that then the 35mm fixed has nice shots and the 300mm for zoom. The 24-50mm for more wideangle.

| | | I use a 80mm Zeiss f2.8 for film stuff and an 18-55mm Canon f3.5-5.6 for digital. I love both of them and, besides not having a wide enough field of view on some occasions (mostly with the Zeiss), I couldn't ask for more.

| | | For just everyday stuff, I use an 18-200 Nikkor VR. For darker shots, I have an 18-50 1.8 that I like.

| | | Interesting, so I guess most everyone (besides brandnewteeth ) mostly use fairly low level zooms or wide angle? Ugh, I'm just so spoiled! I've taken some pics (outside during a fairly bright day, of course) using one hand and full telephoto/12x and the picture turned out well! I guess mostly, I was curious if anyone used fairly large lenses or stuck with something a bit more mobile.

I've shoot with a 70-200. I use it more on larger sites. 16-35, 24-70, and 50L are my primary tripod lenses.

| | | I have a cannon 20d, on which I mount my 35mm f/1.4 prime lens for all UE outings. The 1.4 aperture combined with the iso ramped up to 3200 lets me take night shots hand held without a flash, and really long exposures with just a monopod (or whatever is around, really). I've also got a decently steady hand, which helps. I often bring my IR assist for irritating AF situations.

| | | I just picked up this 20mm fisheye lens. http://rafcamera.com/scl/m42/mir-20m.htm Mine has a Pentax K mount, but I'm not sure if it's original or if the lens was modified. I think it's Russian, from what I've been able to find on the internet. It won't be very practical for interiors since it's so dark even at f3.5, but it might be a good lens to carry around for exteriors and whatnot. I also recently found some older smc Pentax M lenses. 100mm macro (f4 if memory serves) and 135mm f3.5. EDIT: I just discovered that Russian camera manufacturer Zenit made cameras using the Pentax K mount, so the Russian connection theory is adding up. how do you mean so dark?? I use a Meopta Flexaret TLR with a f3 viewfinder and a f3.5 lens. I still take a lot of interiors, interiors don't move so you can easily use a tripod. Maybe you people are all spoiled with your f1.2 or f1.4 lenses but don't forget you don't have much DOF with your lens wide open.

| | | Oh, I didn't say impossible. . . Just impractical. I don't like carrying tripods around while I'm exploring. They make it harder to climb into or out of places, and they're just one more thing I don't feel like dragging along if I have to run. Certainly if you're a tripod person it'd be fine. That said, even in bright sunny daylight with the lens at f3.5, I had to use a 1/30 shutter speed to get something close to what my K1000 considered a correct exposure. EDIT: Granted, that *was* at ISO 100, but still. . . What ever happened to "sunny 16"? [last edit 11/7/2007 12:27 PM by hyphen - edited 1 times]
