|  | | | Although you wouldn't know it from my posts here, I do occasionally take pictures somewhere other than New Orleans and Colorado. These images are from a recent trip with friends to this abandoned prison farm. This was an active municipal prison until 1995, and because it's sort of in the middle of nowhere, it hasn't been completely destroyed by vandals. It's very overgrown, but otherwise it's in good condition (ie, it's safe if you are reasonably careful) and has an unusual amount of original artifacts still in place.

One day I'm going to write an essay on location disclosure in the UrbEx hobby. I'm still undecided as to whether disclosure really has any impact on these locations. Certainly- vandalism, arson, squatters, &etc have an impact. The question is: Does disclosure of a location in the UrbEx community directly contribute to the vandalism of a site?
I'm not convinced either way. From my general observations it seems that vandals find sites on their own, and tell others about them just as we do, and as the site becomes more and more known concurrently in each circle it becomes visited more often.
I can see how it would feel like the more "known" it is in the UrbEx community, the more vandalized it gets. But I wonder if that's not just a non-causal correlation caused by the simultaneous inevitable discovery of an unsecured site by multiple parties.
One way to know would be to observe multiple similar sites that are in different states of disclosure in each community and see if there is any direct relationship between the disclosure in one community and subsequent discovery/disclosure in the other. But that seems a difficult task.
