Ok, this is probably kind of a noob question, but usually, how big are the drains in the Phoenix / Tempe area?

I'd assume, since the ground doesn't soak up that much water out there, that the drains would be relatively large, large enough to fit a human, possibly, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, well, having your planet blown up can have that effect on a species.

The majority of them are 48" RCP but in some places they can get as wide as 60" or more. Almost all storm drains lead to dry washes so there is a good place to start looking for outfalls, and as always, check the forecast for rain so you don't get caught in a flash flood.

Here is a video of a flash flood in Tucson along Grant Road, to give you an idea of just how fast these can come up:

I've spent rainy seasons in and around Scottsdale as a kid staying with my Grandparents, I've seen some pretty intense flash flooding.

I was a kid who always liked to play in the washes and whatnot. Once was in one, saw some water come trickling thru and got the fuck out quick. It was a torrent within 5 minutes. The bad news....I was on the other side of the wash from the house. It was a nice mile walk to a road going over it, and then of course the walk back.

I live near the boarder, and there are a couple drains here that we can stand up in , one we found we could jump in it was so big, but most are kneeling sized. the ones we've entered from manholes have like a large room inside, but the actual pipe is too small to go into. We find most of our drains behind office buildings and sometimes they have them connecting to the big faux bridge things over dry-washes

Great link Trevorland. Funny thing, I'll be in Phoenix March 6-8 for a wedding. His name is Trevor. Huddah-thunk.
