Possible new target...try alone?
< on 9/1/2007 7:27 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

I was chatting with someone when urban exploration was brought up. "Oh, there's this abandoned house just down the street from me" "Really...?" So after dropping him off I check it out.

The front door's boarded up but the windows are busted out. There's a large field directly in front of the house, and woods around the other sides(IE no houses in plain site). It's fairly close to the road, but once I dive through a window I should be safe

Eh, well with no regards with what's inside, what do you guys think? Should I just go it alone or wait until I have someone else to tag along?

Definitely have a tag along, possibly two. I've been in houses; you don't want floors caving in on you all alone.

I absolutely agree with 944kid-take it from someone who's fallen many, many times!

I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me - they're cramming for their final exam...

I agree with these two, take at least one person with you.
And go during the day, in case the house is falling apart you can see where you are going.

and let someone who is not going know where you are and when you should be back, give them a call when you are all out safe. this is not a huge issue with a house but it's still good practice for bigger things.

Master Yoda Cat rocks.

I've done places alone since I was a kid, just be careful, take your time, and keep your head if things go wrong. The quieter you are, and the lower your profile (in most cases), the better.

If there is significant wood rot on the floors, look out.
When sagging floors collapse it's a fast event; running on/in air is hard to do.
Daylight is really the best in most cases.
Considering what your doing, before you do it; use your best judgment as only you can see what's there.

Yep, what's not to say both of you won't fall through the roof?

At one site, my friend and I decided to keep a distance from each other for that reason.

It is always best to not go alone but hey I have been doing this for over 30 years and gone alone alot, just be smart. I just stay close to the walls till I know how how sturdy the floors are. I have only fell through a floor once. Same goes for stairs, don't go busting through middle of anything.

HAHA, ok ok... I get the point ;) Haha, before I posted this, I could just imagine me diving through the window and busting through the floors

Actually, the first house I explored was fairly sturdy. However, I do recall this one part of the floor where my food probably would of gone right through. The only reason it didn't was because of the support beam underneath.

I guess I'll look around for someone else to tag along with me. Anyone here local; Lexington, NC

THANK YOU YODA CAT!

Well, that's good. You wouldn't want to lose your meal to a hole in the floor.

Anyone hear of that guy who was hiking alone in Arizona or something, and he got his arm pinned by a 2,000 lb boulder? He never told anyone where he was going and after a couple of days, he cut his own arm off with a fucking multi-tool. Always explore with someone no matter how safe or small an abandonment looks. I always go with at least one of my friends who is into UE.

What you have my friend there is classsssic case of what resident dsankt refers to as 'shadow ninja' syndrome.... creep onto that house like a rapist in the bushes and you'll know what secrets it holds in the folds. Don't go it alone, someone needs to carry the nerd gear in too

I might dress out tomorrow and try to hit it alone... Maybe ask someone to drop me off and I'd call when they could come back by. I don't know. I would like to have someone there, but I would let people know where I was. My mother knows where it is and doesn't mind me going. She said she might even go in with me

Final call for any locals who might want to try and hit it tomorrow. Worst case, I might drive over and just check it out a bit closer, perhaps get some exterior shots.

you never know, one winter i did a little cottage i found in a field near summers ville WV. i climbed through some barbed wire and walked across a small field that used to be the front yard, it was full of frozen cowshit. i walked into the old front door on the ground floor and walked into the interior.

it wasn't a big house and i soon found a door and pushed it open only to find a dead cow in the old living room.\

as i stood there i realized that the cow had fallen through the ceiling from an upper floor that opened onto the field at the rear of the house which was even with the upper floor at that point.

the best part was when i was looking around at the ceiling and thinking "wow what a fall through the obviously rotten ceiling" when i stepped on a board and made a loud noise..........and two more, large healthy cows peeked over the lip of the upstairs floor at me and the ex cow. talk about an oh shit moment. as i backed into the other room the cows moved around upstairs and i could see the ceiling bow and warp under their weight.

if they had fallen through on me i would have been there until spring as this was miles off the main roads, and nobody knew i was there.

make sure somebody knows where you are!
