Abandoned Mine on the Yuba River

Here's some photos from a favorite place of mine. This is an abandoned mining site on the Yuba River, in the Sierra Nevada foothills. There is a small group of old buildings, broken down cars and equipment, and best of all, the crane. This site is near the town of Washington, CA; accessible only by 4WD. The pool dug out by mining the river is more than 30ft deep. This has got to be the largest pool on that fork of the Yuba river. I've been all up and down the river for more than 40 miles and haven't seen anything else like it. And the best part is that you have an easy drop into 30+ feet of water from heights ranging from 25 to 120ft.

I figured I should include some eye candy so I put up a photo of a couple of friends I went camping with.

The last shot is me jumping from the crane platform which we measured to be 80 - 85ft off the surface of the water. ~3 seconds of air time on this jump.

If you've never been to the Yuba River, I highly recommend the South Fork. The water is comfortably warm, an absolutely beautiful shade of green I haven't seen the like of anywhere else and endless swimming pools and rocks to jump off of.

There are a variety of old mining sites nearby, the largest being the Malakoff Diggings.
-Cheers

Nice photos, from what I can see. What is all that orange/red/metallic stuff in the middle/left photo? I don't think I've ever seen anything like that before.

The landscape reminds me of the Feather River Canyon when I used to live in Chico. Lot's of mines and remnants in those parts.

There's also some cool stuff out near Mineral Bar near Colfax. Looks similar to what you found and downstream from the campsite and bridge, there is some great cliff jumping, an old dredge bucket, and some stuff underwater.

Yeeeeeeeah! I'm leaving in one hour to go back to this mine! I'll take some better photos of the buildings and machinery this time for y'all. We're bringing ropes this time, maybe do some rappelling down the cliff face. I'm gonna try for some freshwater spearfishing also. This might prove to be very difficult as the trout aren't that big, but I've got good aim with my speargun.

Will show photos tomorrow night.

Enjoy your holiday weekend.

Hoverfly, please post your sequence shots of me jumping. I'll post mine of you jumping. I didn't take many pictures on this trip because, time was limited and we ran into the property owners and they weren't friendly.

Gorgeous. That's great timing. You got the takeoff and the splash. I mis-measured the height below this. At first I said 45 ft if you remember. My multiplication was wrong, it was 54 ft. So this jump was from about 62-65 ft. Hoverfly, the side you jumped opposite was around 50. Nice one!

It was so cool to run into you up there. As far out as this is, and the fact that you didn't even get my voicemail, it was amazing that I ended up seeing you right as you arrived.

I'd post my shot of you but I can't find it right now. It's gotten lost in the shuffle... Send me it back or post it yourself.
Cheers,

25 - 35 ft deep. They dug out a huge pit during the course of mining the river here. It's probably the deepest pool on the South Yuba.

I've made a strange observation while watching underwater when people land from high jumps: As you jump from higher, you don't go as deep underwater. This makes no sense to me and might just be the way people opened up their body upon impact, but when my friend jumped from 65ft he went no deeper than 10ft below the surface.

very Impressive that you found Jolly Boys claim . Like many other great river spots on the yuba river get abused very frequently by out of towners . then they ruin it for the locals that actually care about are river. If you truly appreciate jolly boys please leave the location to yourself.

Duly noted. I've always taken the utmost care while at this beautiful place to keep it beautiful by removing trash and other crap I see. I do understand now that this place is private property and that the owners do visit from time to time. I think that I left it vague enough that noone would know where it is unless they asked me. I've only ever brought 5 or 6 people there other than myself. Thanks for the feedback. If you find this thread too revealing, please respond and I'll see if the moderator can remove some of the hints to its location.
Cheers,
