I like the first one the better.

I would try bringing the F-Stop up, or technically down, to 7.1 or 8 so you can get longer exposures and see what you can come up with, like movement in the clouds maybe?

Although this looks like a pretty lit up area.

The first one is VERY good except for the top of the smokestack, which should be in the shot. I would NOT bump up the ap because you are getting a fantastic amount of noise due to the camera you are using. I would use large aps like you did and try to minimize exposure time to try and keep the noise down.

Very very good job for a first attempt. That first shot is great, the second one not so much, and the third is very good. Work on the comp a bit, and learn about white balance. You're totally on the right track.

What causes the noise? Is it the camera or the film speed?

The camera. I was shooting on a friend's not so good Canon PowerShot, which doesn't have a very good image sensor compared to nicer (read: more expensive) cameras.

We were about to go in, when a whole bunch of clueless people showed up and we decided we would take a pass for right then. Gonna go back out sometime next month though.

im curious to how you set up the camera for night photography and got such clarity without over exposing and blowing out the picture.

Step 1: Set exposure time to something like 15".
Step 2: Is that picture over exposed? If so, reduce exposure time.
Step 3: Lather, rinse, repeat.

Look in your camera manual, it really depends on what kind of camera you have. The two I use (from the same company!) have two completely different methods. You probably want manual mode though.

Although it may be taboo to suggest an automatic function, I've gotten good results on night shots using shutter priority mode. You can set the desired shutter speed and the camera will calculate (based on available light) how wide the aperture should be. It's not always perfect of course, but it might be a good place to start if your camera has that option. It's often called Tv or something similar.
